Madurai to Kanyakumari is about 244 km by road on NH44, 4 to 5.5 hours by car via Tirunelveli and Nagercoil. The overnight Kanniyakumari Express leaves Madurai at 00:50 and reaches Kanyakumari at 05:30, in time for morning darshan. Below: road, trains, buses and a plan around the temple's 4:30 am–12:30 pm and 4–8:30 pm hours.
The whole drive is on NH44, the old NH7, which is four-lane almost all the way. Madurai to Tirunelveli is roughly 160 km, and Tirunelveli to Kanyakumari is another 83 km, about 1.5 hours. Expect three toll plazas: Kappalur just south of Madurai, then Nanguneri and Etturvattam.
Kappalur charges around ₹100 for a car one way, and the other two are in the same range. Budget about ₹300 in tolls each way and carry a FASTag; cash lanes are slow on weekend mornings.
The timing that works best from Madurai:
Leave by 5:30–6 am, before Madurai's ring road fills up.
Tea stop near Tirunelveli around 7:30 am.
Reach the temple by 10 am, with a clear two hours before it closes at 12:30 pm.
If you want the sunrise over the three seas as well, that needs a night in Kanyakumari or a departure from Madurai at 1:30 am. Most families do the overnight train instead, which is the next section. The Rameswaram leg is covered in our Madurai to Rameswaram route plan.
Madurai Junction (MDU) to Kanyakumari (CAPE) is 237 km by rail. Only a couple of trains run right to Kanyakumari; the rest end at Nagercoil Junction (NCJ), 20 km short, with buses and a shuttle train covering the gap.
| Train | Leaves Madurai | Reaches | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12633 Kanniyakumari Express | 00:50 | Kanyakumari 05:30 | Daily |
| 16339 CSMT–Nagercoil Express | 03:40 | Nagercoil Jn 09:55 | Daily |
| 20627 Nagercoil Vande Bharat | 10:40 | Nagercoil Jn 13:50 | Six days, not Wednesday |
| 16127 Guruvayur Express | 18:45 | Nagercoil Town 22:50 | Daily |
| 06643 shuttle | Nagercoil Jn 10:35 | Kanyakumari 10:55 | Daily, unreserved |
The 12633 is the one to book. It arrives at 05:30, the station is about 1.5 km from the temple, and the 4:30 am opening means you are inside before the day-trippers from Nagercoil arrive. Sleeper and 3AC fares run from roughly ₹190 to ₹1,500 by class.
From Nagercoil Junction, a town bus to Kanyakumari takes about 30 minutes and costs around ₹30. The 06643 shuttle is cheaper but leaves only at 10:35, so it suits the Vande Bharat crowd badly; take the bus. Verify all times on NTES the week you travel, since the Guruvayur Express timings were adjusted in January 2026.
Government SETC buses to Kanyakumari leave from Mattuthavani, officially the MGR Integrated Bus Stand, on the northern edge of Madurai. The run takes about 5 hours 15 minutes and SETC fares stay fixed through the year, roughly ₹310 to ₹600 by bus type. Frequency is thin, around two departures a day, so book 30 days ahead on tnstc.in.
Private AC buses use the adjoining Mattuthavani omni stand, with the first departure at 00:10 and the last at 15:15. AC seats start near ₹500 and rise with the season. A bus reaching Kanyakumari after 12:30 pm leaves you with an afternoon wait, so choose a departure before 7 am or an overnight one.
The temple is counted among the 108 Shakti Peethas and stands at the point where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. Devi Kanya Kumari is worshipped here as the virgin goddess who waits for Shiva. Yatris traditionally take a snan at the Triveni Sangam ghat before darshan.
Timings: 4:30 am–12:30 pm and 4:00–8:30 pm, with longer hours during Navratri and the Car Festival in May–June.
Entry: free. No special-entry ticket was listed by the temple at the time of writing.
Dress: men remove shirts and vests before the sanctum; women in saree or salwar with a dupatta.
Photos: not allowed inside. Mobiles stay in your pocket.
Entrance: the north gate. The east gate facing the sea stays closed except on festival days.
The legend of the closed east gate is the diamond nose ring. The Devi's nose ring is said to shine so brightly that a sailor mistook it for the lighthouse and wrecked his ship, so the sea-facing door was sealed. Ask the pujari to point out the ring; it still catches the lamp light.
In November and December the sun rises around 6:20 am and sets around 6:00 pm at Kanyakumari. The sunrise is visible from the beach beside the temple, so a 05:30 train arrival gives you sangam snan, sunrise and darshan by 7:30 am. On full-moon evenings the sunset and moonrise are seen together from the same shore.
Vivekananda Rock, reached by a short ferry, is a common stop while the temple is shut between 12:30 and 4 pm. The memorial is open 8 am–4 pm, but the ferry is suspended whenever the sea is rough, as happened in August 2026, so keep it optional.
Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple, 13 km back towards Nagercoil, is the temple most yatris add. Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma are worshipped in one linga here, and the musical pillars are famous.
Suchindram opens 4:30–11:30 am and 5:00–8:30 pm, so plan it before a late-morning Kanyakumari darshan or on the evening drive home. Our three-day Madurai yatra plan shows how it fits with Rameswaram.
With elderly parents: private taxi, leaving Madurai at 6 am, night at Kanyakumari, Suchindram on the way back the next morning. No station stairs, no 00:50 wake-up.
On a budget: the 12633 in sleeper class, return on 12634 at 18:00 the same day. Darshan, snan and sunrise fit inside those hours.
On a tight schedule: taxi out at 5:30 am, darshan by 10 am, back in Madurai by 6 pm. Skip the rock.
Family of four or more: a taxi usually costs less per head than four Vande Bharat seats plus a bus from Nagercoil.
What to avoid: the 184 km figure some booking sites show is the straight-line distance, not the road. Avoid arriving between 12:30 and 4 pm, and avoid planning the Vande Bharat on a Wednesday, when it does not run.
Stay in Kanyakumari if you want the sunrise and an unhurried 4:30 am darshan. TTDC Hotel Tamil Nadu is on the beach a short walk from the temple and takes full payment in advance. Hotel Seaview on East Car Street is the other old standby, a few minutes from the north gate.
December is the costliest month here, with rooms near ₹3,000 a night against under ₹1,000 in July. For Christmas week and the New Year, book two to three months ahead. If you are returning to Madurai the same night, a hotel near Madurai Junction keeps the next morning's Meenakshi darshan easy.
Reach the sangam before the sun does, and the Devi's darshan follows at an easy pace. Om Shakti, Jai Kumari Amma.
