Khandwa to Omkareshwar is about 65 km and Omkareshwar to Maheshwar another 66 km, so two days is the right length. Jyotirlinga darshan on day one, Ahilya Ghat and the Narmada aarti on day two, then back to Khandwa Junction for the night trains.
The one decision that shapes the trip is where you sleep. This plan gives the timings, the road, and the honest answer on Omkareshwar versus Maheshwar for the night.
The loop is a triangle along the Narmada, and none of the legs is long. The problem is never the distance; it is fitting the temple hours and the evening aarti into daylight.
| Leg | Distance | Time by car | Road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khandwa → Omkareshwar | about 65 km | 1.5–2 hrs | Indore–Khandwa highway via Mortakka |
| Omkareshwar → Maheshwar | about 66 km | about 1.5 hrs | SH 38 via Mandleshwar |
| Maheshwar → Khandwa | 110–116 km | 2–2.5 hrs | via Barwaha and Sanawad |
Buses cover the first leg in about 2 hours from roughly ₹130. The Omkareshwar to Maheshwar stretch has no simple direct service; most Yatris change at Mandleshwar, which is the leg that costs a bus Yatri the afternoon. Our Khandwa to Omkareshwar distance and bus guide covers the first leg in detail.
Leave Khandwa by 6:30 am and you are at the bridge by 8:30. Park on the mainland side; the temple is on the island and everyone crosses on foot.
Darshan window: 5:00 am to 12:20 pm, then Madhyanha Bhog, then 1:15 to 4:00 pm. Darshan pauses during each aarti.
Shighra darshan: ₹300 per person on the trust website, worth it on a Monday or a holiday. Normal darshan is free.
Mamleshwar: the second half of the Jyotirlinga, across the river on the mainland. Do it after the main temple, before lunch.
Omkar Parvat parikrama: about 7 km around the island past Gauri Somnath and Siddhanath. Two hours; skip it if you have elders.
Shringar darshan runs 4:30 to 9:30 pm and the temple closes around 10. If you sleep in Omkareshwar, the evening aarti at Koti Tirth Ghat is the reason to.
Maheshwar is Ahilyabai Holkar's capital, and the temples sit inside her fort above the ghat. Set out from Omkareshwar after breakfast; the road through Mandleshwar takes about 1.5 hours.
Ahilya Fort and Rajwada: open through the day, roughly 7 am to 6 pm; Rajwada holds the queen's seat and her statue. The morning Shivalinga pooja in the fort runs 8 to 10 am and visitors may watch.
Ahilyeshwar temple: her memorial shrine, aarti at about 8 am and 6 pm.
Rajrajeshwar temple: a minute up the stone path, famous for its eleven akhand deep kept burning on donated ghee.
Kashi Vishwanath: rebuilt by Ahilyabai in 1780 as a copy of the Varanasi temple, and quiet.
Ahilya Ghat: boats to Baneshwar, the island temple midstream, run about ₹100 per person; the 45-minute ride upstream to Sahastradhara is around ₹1,200 a boat. Agree the fare before you board.
The Narmada aarti is around 7 pm, after sunset. Timings drift with the season, so ask at the ghat in the afternoon.
Lunch is the gap in this day. Eat in the lanes below the fort before 3 pm, because the ghat-side stalls sell little more than tea and poha, and the fort gate is the last place you want to be hungry at 5.
With elders: sleep in Maheshwar on night one if you can reach it by evening; the fort has a road to the top, and the aarti is a short, flat walk. Skip the Omkar parikrama.
On a budget: bus to Omkareshwar, Bhakt Niwas for the night, bus to Mandleshwar and on to Maheshwar next morning. Expect to lose the Maheshwar afternoon.
Train Yatri on a deadline: do Omkareshwar in the morning, drive to Maheshwar for the fort and aarti, and leave straight after for a 1:40 or 2:25 am departure from Khandwa.
Avoid: reaching Omkareshwar after 11 am on day one, which puts you into the bhog break, and arriving at Maheshwar after 5 pm, which costs you the fort.
From Maheshwar the road back runs through Barwaha and Sanawad, 110 to 116 km, about 2 to 2.5 hours in the evening. Leave by 8 pm after the aarti and you are at the station close to 10:30.
Khandwa's long-distance departures cluster in the small hours. Aggregator timetables list the Mahanagari Express (22178) around 1:40 am and the Mumbai Mail (12321) around 2:25 am towards Mumbai, and the Kolhapur–Nizamuddin (12147) around 2:15 am towards Delhi. Check NTES before you commit.
Yatris who have not yet booked their arrival station should read Omkareshwar Road or Khandwa, which to book.
If you would rather skip the late drive, sleep in Maheshwar and leave at 6 am; you are at Khandwa before 9. That version also lets you see the morning pooja in the fort, which the evening-only plan misses entirely.
This is the question the brief is really about. Both towns are small, both face the river, and they suit different Yatris.
| Town | Options | Indicative rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omkareshwar | Gajanan Maharaj Bhakt Niwas (walk-in, no advance booking); small hotels 300–600 m from the temple | hotels from around ₹1,500 | Evening aarti at Koti Tirth, dawn darshan |
| Maheshwar | MP Tourism's Narmada Resort, 33 rooms near the fort; the Ahilya Fort heritage hotel; guesthouses near the fort gate | resort around ₹4,500 plus tax with two meals; guesthouses from around ₹1,500 | Aarti at the ghat, quiet night, early run to Khandwa |
Our recommendation: night one in Maheshwar if your Omkareshwar darshan is done by 2 pm, because it puts the aarti at your doorstep and makes the morning drive back short. Sleep in Omkareshwar only if you want dawn darshan twice or are walking the parikrama.
Darshan in the morning, a river aarti at night, and the Narmada beside you the whole way. Har Har Mahadev.
