Two Jyotirlingas in two days from Khandwa Junction is a realistic loop: about 70 km to Omkareshwar on day one, 140 km on to Ujjain the same evening, Mahakal on day two, and 190 km back to Khandwa, roughly 400 km in all.
The one decision that makes or breaks it is where you sleep, and the answer is Ujjain.
Every package on the market starts this circuit at Indore or Ujjain. This plan starts where the trains do, at Khandwa, and ends back on your platform.
The road runs Khandwa → Deshgaon → Sanawad → Mortakka → Omkareshwar, then back through Barwaha and the Choral ghat to Mhow, around Indore on the bypass, and up to Ujjain. The return uses the same highway in reverse.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Khandwa Junction → Omkareshwar | about 70 km | 1 h 20 – 1 h 45 |
| Omkareshwar → Ujjain (via Indore bypass) | 135–145 km | 3 – 4 h |
| Ujjain → Khandwa Junction | 186–194 km | 3 h 20 – 3 h 45 |
| Whole loop | about 400 km | 8 – 9 h of driving |
One warning for late 2026. The 33 km Tejaji Nagar–Balwada four-laning of the Indore–Khandwa road, with three tunnels through the Choral ghat, was 86–88% done in May and is due in December. Expect diversions on the ghat and drive it in daylight.
Leave Khandwa by 7 AM and you are at Omkareshwar before 9, inside the long morning darshan window. The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga stands on the island; Mamleshwar, the Paramara-era shrine on the south bank, is the other half of the same Jyotirlinga, so do both.
| Omkareshwar temple (trust schedule) | Time |
|---|---|
| Mangal aarti and bhog | 4:30–5:00 AM |
| Morning darshan | 5:00 AM–12:20 PM |
| Madhyanha bhog (closed) | 12:20–1:15 PM |
| Afternoon darshan | 1:15–4:00 PM |
| Evening shringar (closed) | 4:00–4:30 PM |
| Shringar darshan | from 4:30 PM |
| Shayan aarti | around 9:30 PM (one trust page says 8:30) |
Mamleshwar is listed at about 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM. Darshan is closed during each aarti and shringar, so time your crossing to avoid 12:20–1:15.
The crossing: two bridges and boats. The Mamleshwar Setu suspension bridge shut in June 2026 after a cable clasp broke, and we could not confirm a full public reopening; the 1979 cantilever footbridge and the boats were running in October.
The parikrama: the 7 km Omkar Parvat walk takes 2–3 hours. Fit it in only if you skip the afternoon darshan.
Evening: the free Narmada aarti at Kotitirth Ghat is worth staying for only if you are not pushing on to Ujjain.
Leave Omkareshwar by 5:30 PM after the shringar darshan and you are in Ujjain by about 9 PM. That lets you sleep until 1 AM, dress, and walk to the Bhasma aarti queue. Stopping at Omkareshwar instead means a 1 AM departure through the ghat in the dark, which nobody should do.
The Bhasma aarti pass is online only in 2026, released about 30 days ahead at a fee of around ₹200; the old free next-morning counter has been reported abolished, and a Tatkal quota opens one day before.
If you have no pass, Mahakal still opens for general darshan from about 6 AM. Our Bhasma aarti booking guide covers the rules.
Dress for Bhasma aarti: dhoti for men, saree or salwar for women; phones are banned inside and go into the free lockers at Gate 4.
No pass, no problem: general darshan at 6 AM, or the ₹250 Sheeghra darshan ticket, see is it worth it.
Keep Mahakal to the morning: Bhasma aarti or 6 AM darshan, then Harsiddhi and Bade Ganesh on foot. For the full darshan rules, queues and timings, use our Ujjain pages rather than this post; they are updated far more often.
Then the return. Two overnight trains run Ujjain → Khandwa direct via Bhopal and Itarsi, the 12719 Jaipur–Hyderabad and the 17019 Hisar–Hyderabad, both leaving Ujjain about 2:15–2:20 AM and reaching Khandwa about 11:30 AM, roughly 9 hours. Each runs only on certain days, and listings disagree on which, so check NTES before you build on them.
| Return option | Time | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| Direct train 12719 / 17019 | 2:20 AM → 11:30 AM, 9 h | sleeper fare |
| Taxi via Indore and Barwaha | 3 h 20 – 3 h 45 | about ₹4,000–4,800 |
| Train via Itarsi (two trains) | 8–9 h with a change | sleeper fare |
The Indore–Khandwa broad gauge is not ready; the Mhow–Sanawad section is due in March 2028, so there is no short rail route yet. For most Yatris the taxi wins: leave Ujjain at 11 AM and you are at Khandwa Junction by 3 PM for an evening train.
Pass holders for Bhasma aarti: the plan above, exactly. Night in Ujjain, early darshan, taxi back by afternoon.
No pass, with elders: sleep at Omkareshwar instead, leave at 6 AM, reach Mahakal by 10 for the Bhog aarti hour, and take the 12962 Avantika Express to Mumbai at 18:50 or the 12919 Malwa to Delhi at 13:45 rather than returning to Khandwa.
On a budget: bus Khandwa to Omkareshwar (about 27 a day, from ₹131, 2 hours), then bus to Ujjain via Indore, and the direct night train back.
Tight schedule: taxi throughout. At ₹9–12 per km for a sedan and ₹12.5–16 for an SUV, the 400 km loop runs roughly ₹4,500–5,500 for a sedan and ₹6,000–7,500 for an SUV, plus the driver's night allowance.
Avoid 21–26 November 2026, the Omkareshwar Kartik mela, and the Diwali week around 8 November, unless you want the crowds. For the reverse-direction plan, see Khandwa to Ujjain for Bhasma aarti.
Night one is Ujjain. Stay within a kilometre of Mahakaleshwar so the 1 AM walk to the Bhasma aarti gate is short.
Ujjain, near Mahakal: dharamshalas from about ₹100–600, basic hotels ₹500–1,200, mid-range ₹1,200–2,500. MP Tourism runs two properties in Freeganj, a 10-minute drive away.
Omkareshwar, if you choose it: MP Tourism's hilltop property with temple views, the Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan Bhakta Niwas (no advance booking), and dharamshalas around ₹400–1,000.
Khandwa, if your train is late: business hotels within a 10-minute walk of the Junction at roughly ₹2,500–3,000.
Two Jyotirlingas, one driver, and a train you do not have to run for. Har Har Mahadev.
