Khandwa to Ujjain is about 190 km by road and 4 hours via Indore, and the road is the only way to reach Mahakaleshwar in time for a Bhasma Aarti the next morning. The one daily train leaves Khandwa at 6:05 pm and reaches Ujjain at 4:10 am, after the aarti gate has closed.
This guide compares train and taxi, tells you where to sleep, and lays out a one-night plan that works.
Every road route runs through Indore. The first half, Khandwa to Indore, is about 130 km on NH-347BG through Sanawad, Barwaha and Mhow. It crosses the Choral and Bherughat ghats, and that is where the time goes. Allow 2.5 hours for this half today.
The second half, Indore to Ujjain, is 55 km on the four-lane Indore–Ujjain road. It takes about an hour outside Indore's evening rush. Together the drive is 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the ghats and how long you stop.
The ghat section is being replaced. The 33 km Tejaji Nagar–Balwada four-lane with three tunnels was 88 percent complete at last report and is slated to open by December 2026. When it opens, the Indore leg drops to about an hour.
There is no Khandwa–Indore rail link yet. The gauge conversion through Omkareshwar Road and Mhow is targeted at Simhastha 2028, so every train to Ujjain goes the long way round through Itarsi and Bhopal.
| Train | Khandwa dep | Ujjain arr | Runs | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17605 Kacheguda–Bhagat Ki Kothi Exp | 6:05 pm | 4:10 am | Daily | ~10 h |
| 17020 Hyderabad–Hisar Exp | 9:30 am | 4:55 pm | Weekly | ~7.5 h |
The daily train is a sleeper night, which sounds ideal until you see the arrival. 4:10 am is after the Bhasma Aarti gate has closed, so you take darshan that morning, sleep in Ujjain, and attend the aarti the next morning. That is a two-night trip, not one.
The weekly 17020 arrives at a civilised 4:55 pm, but it runs one day a week and aggregators disagree on which. Check NTES for your date before you plan around it.
Booking is online at shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in, the window opens 30 days ahead, and the fee is about ₹200 per person. Carry the same photo ID you booked with. Men wear a dhoti, women a saree or salwar suit; no shirts, no trousers.
Pass holders report at Gate 4 on the Mahakal Lok side between about 2:30 and 3:00 am. The aarti itself begins at 4 am and runs close to two hours.
We keep the full rules on our Bhasma Aarti booking guide and the dress code and reporting-time page. This post stays on the journey.
Khandwa to Indore has roughly 20 buses a day from several private operators, first around 2:30 am and last around 10:50 pm, taking 3.5 to 4 hours. They arrive at Indore's Sarwate or Gangwal stands.
From Indore to Ujjain, buses leave every few minutes through the day and the last ones run past 11 pm. The hop is 55 km, about 1 to 1.5 hours. Budget the change at 45 minutes, more if you land at Gangwal and need Sarwate.
A bus plan works if you leave Khandwa by noon. It does not work the morning after the aarti if you have a train to catch in Khandwa: you would be bussing the ghats on no sleep.
This is the plan that gets you to the aarti with one hotel night and no wasted day.
Day 1, 1:30 pm: leave Khandwa by taxi after lunch. Ghats in daylight.
5:30–6:00 pm: reach your hotel within a kilometre of Mahakal. Check in, eat early.
7:00 pm: optional Sandhya Aarti darshan from the general queue, then sleep by 9 pm.
Day 2, 2:00 am: driver drops you at Gate 4. Report by 2:30 am.
4:00–6:00 am: Bhasma Aarti. Vibhuti, then out through Mahakal Lok.
7:00 am: breakfast, leave Ujjain. 11:30 am in Khandwa, in time for a midday train.
Same-day return is realistic because the drive back is downhill and before the heat. If you want Omkareshwar too, our Bhasma Aarti and Omkareshwar in one trip plan slots it in on the way back.
With elders: taxi both ways. The ghat buses are rough, and a 2 am auto hunt outside a strange hotel is the last thing anyone needs.
On a budget: bus via Indore on day 1, auto to the hotel, and a shared auto to Gate 4 at 2 am. Allow an extra night.
On a tight schedule: taxi, one night, back in Khandwa by noon. It is the only shape that fits a 24-hour window.
Train lovers: 17605 overnight is fine, but book two nights in Ujjain and accept the aarti on the second morning.
Avoid the night train if your pass is for the morning you arrive. The 4:10 am arrival will miss it, and the pass is non-transferable.
Sleep in Ujjain, not Indore, and inside a kilometre of the temple. From Ujjain Junction the temple is about 2 km, and autos run 24 hours outside platform 1, so even a late check-in is simple. A full auto to a temple-side hotel is roughly ₹100–150.
Choosing the lane matters more than the star rating. Our where to stay for Bhasma Aarti guide names the lanes you can walk from at 2 am.
Cross the ghats in daylight, sleep beside the temple, and let the driver worry about 2 am. Har Har Mahadev.
