Khandwa Junction to Omkareshwar is about 70 km by road, 1.5 to 2 hours by car and just over 2 hours by bus. From the station you have three choices: the bus from the city stand, the ₹15 MEMU to Sanawad plus a shared jeep, or a taxi. Here are the numbers.
The road from Khandwa to Omkareshwar runs north about 70 km: Khandwa → Chhegaon Makhan → Sanawad → Mortakka → the Narmada bridge at Omkareshwar. Bus booking sites show a shorter 52 km because they measure to the Sanawad side; the full run to the ghat is around 70 km.
Expect 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours by car on a normal day. The stretch is mostly two-lane state highway with villages, so night driving is slower than the map suggests.
Three things stretch that time:
Sawan Mondays and Mahashivratri, when police divert traffic before Mortakka and the last 12 km can take an hour.
Weekend evenings, when Indore day-trippers and Khandwa buses share the Sanawad crossing.
Monsoon, July to September, when the Narmada bridge approach floods on bad days.
Khandwa's bus stand is in the city centre, a short auto ride from the station — under ten minutes outside peak traffic. Private operators run Khandwa–Omkareshwar through the day.
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Fare | From about ₹140 for a non-AC seat |
| Journey time | About 2 hours, with stops at Sanawad |
| First departures | Sleeper coaches from around 03:30, seaters from the morning |
| Last departures | Roughly 18:00–19:30, earlier on quiet days |
| Where it drops you | Omkareshwar bus stand, a 10–15 minute walk to the ghat |
Buy the ticket at the counter, not from a tout at the station gate.
The MEMU between Khandwa and Sanawad was restored in March 2024 on the new broad gauge, and in 2025 the railways doubled it to two trips a day and cut the fare to ₹15.
61139: Khandwa 09:00 → Ajanti 09:27 → Attar 09:48 → Nimar Kheri 10:10 → Sanawad 10:30
61141: Khandwa 13:35 → Sanawad about 15:00
Return 61140: Sanawad 11:10 → Khandwa 12:35
Return 61142: Sanawad 15:30 → Khandwa 16:55
Some timetables show it skipping two midweek days, others show daily running, so check NTES the night before. From Sanawad, shared jeeps and autos cover the 10–12 km to Omkareshwar in about 25 minutes. The catch is the return: the last MEMU back leaves Sanawad at 15:30, which rules out an evening aarti.
A private car from Khandwa Junction is the only option that works with every train time, including the Punjab Mail halt at 04:52 and the Mahanagari around 01:40. Cab aggregators quote the one-way run from roughly ₹2,000, with round trips and waiting priced on top.
It makes sense when:
You are three or more. Split three ways, a taxi costs little more than bus seats for a family and saves two hours of transfers.
You have elders. Three vehicle changes with luggage, at Khandwa, Sanawad and Omkareshwar, is the part Yatris regret.
Your return train leaves the same evening. No bus or MEMU guarantees you a 20:00 arrival back at the station; a waiting driver does.
Our drivers also know the Mortakka diversion routes on festival days, which the bus cannot take.
The Shri Omkareshwar Temple Trust publishes a fixed daily schedule, and the gaps in it decide your plan:
04:30–05:00 Mangal aarti and bhog; darshan opens 05:00
12:20–13:15 Madhyanha bhog — closed
13:15–16:00 afternoon darshan
16:00–16:30 Sayamkalin shringar — closed
16:30–21:30 shringar darshan; shayan aarti 21:30–22:00
Arrive at Khandwa before dawn and a taxi has you at the ghat by 07:00 for the quiet morning queue. Arrive mid-morning and the MEMU route lands you at the temple at exactly 11:00, which is fine. Anything later, and you are better off eating lunch in Omkareshwar and joining the 13:15 reopening.
Normal darshan is free and needs no booking. The trust sells an optional Shighra Darshan slot on its website, valid only for the slot you pick, so match it to your road time rather than guessing. For a tested timetable from the platform back to the platform, see our same-day darshan plan from Khandwa station.
Alone, on a budget, no fixed return: bus from the stand. Cheapest door-to-door, runs all day.
Alone and arriving by 08:30: MEMU 61139 plus a shared jeep. About ₹15 plus the jeep fare, and a pleasant ride through Nimar farmland.
Family of three or more, or with elders: taxi from the station. One vehicle, luggage stays in the boot, driver waits.
Tight same-day return: taxi, without question. Buses stop at dusk and the last MEMU leaves Sanawad at 15:30.
Avoid the autos at the station gate offering to drive you "to Omkareshwar" for a bargain fare. Many drop you at Sanawad.
Most Yatris coming via Khandwa do Omkareshwar as a day trip, but a night at Omkareshwar lets you catch the 04:30 mangal aarti and the 21:30 shayan aarti. Rooms cluster around the bus stand and the new bridge; book ahead for weekends and Sawan.
Khandwa has plain hotels near the station for a late-night train. Coming from Indore instead? Our hour-by-hour Omkareshwar day plan from Indore covers that side.
Reach Khandwa, pick the option that fits your train, and the Narmada will do the rest. Har Har Mahadev.
