Kartik Purnima 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November, and the Omkareshwar Kartik Mela is listed around it from 21 to 26 November 2026. From Khandwa the Jyotirlinga is only about 65 km away, so the real question is when to leave. This guide gives the dates, the dawn plan, where cars are stopped, and the way back.
The Kartik Mela at Omkareshwar runs from Dev Uthani Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima. In 2026 that is a short, crowded window in the fourth week of November.
| Day | Date (2026) | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Dev Uthani) | Friday 20 November | Panchkroshi Yatra leaves Gomukh Ghat |
| Mela listing begins | Saturday 21 November | Stalls and dharamshalas fill |
| Kartik Purnima | Tuesday 24 November | Narmada snan, Jyotirlinga darshan, Omkar Parvat parikrama |
| Mela listing ends | Thursday 26 November | Crowds thin from the 25th |
Most panchangs put Dev Uthani Ekadashi on Friday 20 November; Vaishnava calendars list Saturday 21. The Purnima tithi is widely listed as beginning late on 23 November and ending around 8:20 pm on 24 November, which is why the snan is a dawn affair on the Tuesday.
If you can choose only one day, choose the 24th. If you want the mela without the Purnima crush, go on the 21st or 22nd.
The Panchkroshi is a walking parikrama, not a one-temple visit. It starts at Gomukh Ghat on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi and comes back to Omkareshwar on Purnima.
Route: about 50 km in a loop through Anjarud, Sanawad, Toksar, Semarla, Barwaha and Siddhavarkut, then back across the Narmada.
Duration: five days, with night halts in the villages on the way.
Finish: Jyotirlinga darshan and the Omkar Parvat parikrama, which is roughly 7 km around the island past Gauri Somnath and Siddhanath.
Scale: the official listing speaks of more than a lakh Yatris.
A day Yatri from Khandwa does not walk it, but you share the roads around Sanawad and Barwaha with it on the 23rd and 24th. Expect slow traffic there in the final two days.
The temple trust's normal timetable is the baseline. On Purnima the trust says timings "may vary", and no 2026 notice is out yet, so plan around the regular slots and confirm on the Samvad Setu helpline (8 am to 8 pm) the week before.
Mangal aarti: 4:30 to 5:00 am; darshan opens at 5:00 am.
Morning darshan: 5:00 am to 12:20 pm, then Madhyanha Bhog till 1:15 pm.
Afternoon darshan: 1:15 to 4:00 pm.
Shringar darshan: 4:30 to 9:30 pm, Shayan aarti and close around 10 pm.
Darshan pauses during every aarti and during shringar.
Normal darshan is free. Shighra darshan is ₹300 per person, bookable on the trust website for a fixed slot. The snan itself happens at Koti Tirth Ghat, directly below the temple, and most Yatris go from the water straight into the line.
Mamleshwar, the other half of the Jyotirlinga, is across the river on the mainland bank. Do it on the way out.
Khandwa to Omkareshwar is about 65 km by road, via Mortakka on the Indore–Khandwa highway and then the short turn-off to the town. On an ordinary day it is 1.5 to 2 hours by car; buses take about 2 hours and start from roughly ₹130. On Purnima, add an hour for the approach.
A plan that works for the 24th:
3:45 am leave the Khandwa Junction area.
5:30 am park outside the town, walk to the bridge.
6:00 am snan at Koti Tirth Ghat, then straight into the darshan line.
8:30 to 9:30 am darshan done; cross to Mamleshwar.
11:00 am start back; 1:00 pm in Khandwa for lunch.
Buses from Khandwa run through the day, but on Purnima the morning ones fill at the stand and the return ones are the real gamble. Our post on the station-to-Omkareshwar same-day plan covers the bus timings on a normal day.
The trust lists its parking as the New Bus Stand, Old Bus Stand, Hat Bazar, Kashi Vishwanath, Brahmapuri, Kuber Bhandari and a government lot. It also says plainly that during festivals entry into the town can be restricted and vehicles must park outside. That is what happens on Purnima.
Expect to park on the Mortakka side and walk 1 to 2 km to the bridge; carry nothing you cannot carry for an hour.
The temple is on the island, so everyone crosses on foot by the bridge. Free wheelchairs are issued from the Yatri Suvidha Kendra near the Jhula Pul.
Nobody publishes which lot opens on the day. This is the one thing a local driver knows and a Yatri from outside does not.
With elders: taxi, leave at 4 am, Shighra darshan at ₹300, wheelchair from the Suvidha Kendra. Skip the parikrama.
On a budget: first bus from Khandwa, free darshan, return bus by early afternoon before the stand fills. Carry water and a snack.
On a tight schedule: go on the 22nd or 23rd instead of Purnima; same mela, half the queue, back by lunch.
Doing the Panchkroshi: stay in Omkareshwar from the 19th; a Khandwa day trip does not fit a five-day walk.
Avoid: arriving after 8 am on the 24th, and driving into the town hoping for a spot.
Leave Omkareshwar by early afternoon. The return crowd peaks after the evening aarti, and Khandwa is 2 hours away even without it.
Khandwa Junction's long-distance trains leave in the small hours. Aggregator timetables list the Mahanagari Express (22178) around 1:40 am and the Mumbai Mail (12321) around 2:25 am towards Mumbai, and the Kolhapur–Nizamuddin (12147) around 2:15 am towards Delhi. Check NTES before you rely on any of them.
If you are deciding which station to arrive at in the first place, read Omkareshwar Road or Khandwa: which station to book. Yatris coming from Indore have a separate Kartik Purnima plan from Indore.
Omkareshwar's rooms are few and the mela week takes them first. The Gajanan Maharaj Bhakt Niwas has long worked on walk-in availability rather than advance booking; the small hotels near the bridge are gone weeks ahead in Kartik.
| Base | Best for | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Omkareshwar | Panchkroshi walkers, Purnima snan before dawn | Rooms scarce; book the day your dates are fixed |
| Khandwa | Purnima day-trippers, train Yatris | 4 am start; 65 km each way |
For a Purnima-only visit, sleeping in Khandwa and leaving at 4 am is the better call. You get a room, a bed near the station and a car waiting downstairs.
Take the dip at Koti Tirth before the sun is up, and the rest of the day looks after itself. Har Har Mahadev.
