Mumbai sits close to some of Maharashtra's busiest Jyotirlingas, temple towns and coastal shrines, but each one needs a different amount of time. Trimbakeshwar and Bhimashankar work as a same-day round trip if you leave early. Kolhapur, Ganpatipule and Vaishno Devi need a weekend or longer.
Trimbakeshwar sits roughly 165–180 km from Mumbai on NH160 via Ghoti, about 4 to 5 hours each way. Bhimashankar is a little closer, around 210–220 km via Kalyan or Pune, usually 4 to 5 hours too.
A private taxi can manage a sunrise-to-midnight round trip to either town. A shared bus or train makes this harder, since return services thin out after early evening.
This pace suits a quick weekend morning or a single day off work. It also suits a family with young children who cannot handle two nights on the road.
If you would rather turn Trimbakeshwar into a longer circuit, our Shirdi + 3 Jyotirlinga from Mumbai plan covers a 4-stop route.
Shirdi is about 240–245 km from Mumbai via the Ghoti-Sinnar stretch of NH160, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road. MSRTC's Shivneri AC buses run this route for ₹500–750.
Non-AC Vithai buses start from around ₹404, and the journey by bus typically runs close to 7 hours. A Vande Bharat Express also runs direct from Mumbai CSMT to Sainagar Shirdi.
A same-day round trip is possible if you leave before 5 am. But darshan queues at the Sai Baba temple can run long on weekends, so many travelers prefer one night in Shirdi.
Kolhapur, home to the Mahalakshmi temple, is about 350–375 km from Mumbai, a 6.5 to 7 hour drive. The overnight Mahalaxmi Express covers it too, leaving CSMT near 20:15 and reaching Kolhapur near 07:20.
That train ride takes about 11 hours. IndiGo also flies this route directly in roughly 1 hour, with three to four flights a day.
Ganpatipule, the coastal Ganesh shrine, is around 316–350 km by road, 5 to 6.5 hours of driving. The closest station is Ratnagiri, about 35 km away.
Trains like the Konkan Kanya or Mandovi Express reach Ratnagiri in roughly 5 hours 47 minutes from Mumbai.
Neither Kolhapur nor Ganpatipule works well as a there-and-back day trip. Both reward one night's stay instead.
Vaishno Devi is in a different category altogether. The Mumbai-to-Jammu flight takes about 2 hours 45 minutes on the direct route, though frequency is limited.
From Jammu airport, Katra is about 60 km away. A prepaid taxi costs roughly ₹1,800–2,500 for a 1.5 to 2 hour drive.
The Katra-to-Bhawan trek itself covers close to 14 km on foot, needing 5 to 7 hours. Ponies, palkis, electric vehicles and helicopters are all available too.
The helicopter option is a 7-minute flight to Sanjichhat, followed by about a 3 km walk. A ropeway now links the Bhawan to Bhairon Baba Mandir in just 3 minutes.
Between the flight, the trek and the return, this yatra needs the better part of a week. Our Mumbai to Vaishno Devi flight guide breaks down the full route.
The table below lines up travel time against what is realistically doable, so you can match the trip to how many days you actually have.
| Destination | One-way travel time | Realistic time needed |
|---|---|---|
| Trimbakeshwar | ~4–5 hrs by road | Single day |
| Bhimashankar | ~4–5 hrs by road | Single day |
| Shirdi | ~4.5–5 hrs road, ~7 hrs by bus | Single day or 1 night |
| Ganpatipule | ~5–6.5 hrs road, ~6 hrs train + road | Weekend |
| Kolhapur | ~6.5–7 hrs road, ~11 hrs overnight train, ~1 hr flight | Weekend |
| Pandharpur | ~7–8 hrs road, ~8 hrs overnight train | Weekend |
| Vaishno Devi | ~2h45m flight + Katra trek | 4–6 days |
For elders or families with small children, Trimbakeshwar or Bhimashankar by private taxi is the least tiring option. A long bus ride is best avoided.
Budget travelers can lean on MSRTC's Shivneri buses to Shirdi from ₹404, or the Mahalaxmi Express to Kolhapur, far cheaper than flying.
If your schedule is genuinely just one day, stick to Trimbakeshwar or Bhimashankar. The other three destinations cannot be rushed there and back.
Shravan Somvar, the Mondays that fall in the Hindu month of Shravan, brings the heaviest footfall of the year to Trimbakeshwar and Bhimashankar. Queues at Trimbakeshwar can run close to 3 hours.
VIP darshan is suspended for the whole month at both temples, so even paid fast-track options disappear during this window.
Pandharpur has its own extreme season. Ashadhi Ekadashi 2026 fell on 25 July, and the Pandharpur Wari ran from 7 to 25 July, with lakhs of Warkaris converging on the town.
A quick weekend visit during this window is not realistic, since roads in and around Pandharpur are dedicated to the Wari itself. Outside these windows, weekday darshan queues are noticeably shorter than on weekends.
Where you sleep the night before matters almost as much as the route you take. Near CSMT or Dadar suits an early train to Shirdi, Kolhapur or Pandharpur.
An airport-side stay makes more sense before a morning flight to Jammu for Vaishno Devi.
Book Shirdi weekend or Thursday rooms 2 to 4 weeks ahead, since they sell out fast. During Shravan Somvar or Ashadhi Ekadashi, push that to 6 to 8 weeks or more.
Our guide to staying in Mumbai before your yatra covers options near CSMT, Dadar and the airport in more detail.
Whichever route fits your calendar, a little planning around travel time makes the darshan itself unhurried. Om Sai Ram.
