Yes, add it — if you can give the day a proper 10-12 hours. Ellora Caves sit barely a couple of kilometres past Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga, and TripSaffron's own Shirdi taxi route already swings through both on one trip.
The real question isn't whether Ellora is worth seeing — the Kailasa Temple alone answers that. It's whether you can fit darshan at Grishneshwar and a proper look at the caves into one day without racing daylight.
Shirdi to Ellora Caves is roughly 100 km one-way, about 2.5 to 3 hours on the road through Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. That already rules out a half-day dash — you are looking at 5-6 hours of driving alone if you do the round trip and add Grishneshwar.
TripSaffron's own taxi package for this route lists 191.2 km and a 12-hour full day, which covers the drive out, both stops, and the drive back to Shirdi. That figure is the honest planning number, not the one-way distance you'll see quoted elsewhere.
Our Shirdi to Grishneshwar guide breaks down the same route if Ellora is a maybe and Grishneshwar darshan is the fixed plan. If you're weighing Ellora against Maharashtra's other Jyotirlingas from Shirdi, Jyotirlingas Near Shirdi lines up the options.
Ellora Caves are commonly open from 6 AM to 6 PM, with last entry roughly an hour before closing. The site is closed every Tuesday — plan around it, because a Tuesday trip means Grishneshwar darshan only.
Entry fees are modest and set by the ASI:
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| Indian nationals | ₹40 |
| Foreign nationals | ₹600 |
| Children under 15 | Free |
| Video camera | ₹25 extra |
| Car parking | About ₹30 |
Tickets are sold at the gate and through the ASI's online portal. Carry a printed or downloaded copy if you book ahead — the network at the site is patchy.
Ellora has 34 rock-cut caves: Buddhist (1-12), Hindu (13-29) and Jain (30-34). Most Yatris only need one of them — Cave 16, the Kailasa Temple, a single monolithic temple carved top-down out of one rock face. It's the reason people drive out here.
If your day is tight, seeing Cave 16 properly plus a quick walk through two or three neighbouring caves takes about 2-3 hours. A fuller visit covering the Buddhist viharas and Jain caves on either side runs 4-5 hours.
For a first visit on a Grishneshwar day, budget the shorter window and treat the rest as a reason to come back.
Because the two sites are so close together, the order you visit them in matters more than the drive itself. Grishneshwar's morning darshan window runs roughly 5:30 AM to 12 PM, then again from 4 PM to 9:30 PM. Ellora opens around 6 AM and has no shade over the Kailasa Temple courtyard once the sun is up.
| Plan | Pros | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Grishneshwar first, then Ellora | Shorter darshan queue early, caves still cool at opening | Leaves Shirdi very early, around 3-4 AM |
| Ellora first, then Grishneshwar | Comfortable Shirdi departure, caves in morning light | Darshan queue builds through late morning |
For most Yatris, Grishneshwar first works better. An early darshan avoids the mid-morning queue, and you reach the caves while the stone courtyard is still shaded and cool — Kailasa Temple in direct afternoon sun with no cover is genuinely hard on elders and children.
Not every Shirdi trip has room for a 12-hour day. Here's a rough guide:
Travelling with elders or young children: do Grishneshwar darshan and skip the caves, or keep Ellora to the Cave 16 highlight only — avoid the midday sun and the walking between caves.
On a tight one-day schedule: pick one. Grishneshwar darshan plus Cave 16 alone is realistic in 8-9 hours; the full cave complex is not.
On a budget but with a full day free: this is the ideal combination — one shared taxi day covers both, and entry fees for Indian nationals are low.
Genuinely interested in the caves: give it the full day and the 4-5 hour visit. Ellora rewards time, and a rushed pass through Cave 16 alone undersells it.
What to avoid: a same-day add-on of Ajanta Caves as well. Ajanta is a separate, longer drive, and squeezing all three — Grishneshwar, Ellora, Ajanta — into one day from Shirdi leaves almost no real time at any of them.
Our Ellora Caves from Sambhajinagar guide has the fuller cave-by-cave breakdown if you're basing yourself closer to the site instead of doing it as a Shirdi day trip.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
If you're doing Grishneshwar first, an early departure from Shirdi matters more than where you stay in Ellora. Book a Shirdi stay close to the temple road so a 3-4 AM taxi pickup isn't a hassle in itself, and confirm the pickup time with your driver the night before.
If you'd rather split the trip and overnight near the caves instead of returning to Shirdi the same night, Sambhajinagar city has far more hotel choices than the small town near Ellora itself, and it's a short drive from both Ellora and Grishneshwar.
Om Sai Ram — and a quiet moment at Grishneshwar's Jyotirlinga before the caves rarely leaves a Yatri disappointed.
