Shirdi to Pandharpur is about 275–305 km by road, not the 657 km some route planners show, and a car covers it in 6 to 7 hours. A one-day dash is possible, but two days is what puts you at Vitthal's feet at kakad aarti instead of in an afternoon queue. Here is the split that works.
The maths of a one-day trip is unkind. Even leaving Shirdi at 6 am you reach Pandharpur around 1 pm, walk into the pad sparsh queue of 2 to 3 hours on a normal day, and then face a 6-hour drive back in the dark.
The two-day version flips that. You arrive on the afternoon of Day 1, sleep within walking distance of the mandir, and are in the kakad aarti queue before 4 am on Day 2. By 8 am you have taken darshan and the whole day is yours for the return.
Day 1: Sai Baba darshan at Shirdi by 8 am, leave by 9 am, reach Pandharpur 3–4 pm, evening on the Chandrabhaga ghat.
Day 2: Kakad aarti 4:00–5:30 am, pad sparsh darshan, breakfast, leave by 10 am, back in Shirdi by 5 pm.
Read the route options between the two towns if you only need distances and fares.
The fastest line runs Shirdi → Ahmednagar → Jamkhed → Kurduwadi → Pandharpur, a little under 300 km. Via Solapur or Daund adds roughly 30 to 40 minutes.
| Route | Distance | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Via Ahmednagar–Jamkhed | ~275–300 km | 6–6.5 hours |
| Via Solapur | ~305 km | ~7 hours |
| Via Daund–Kurduwadi | ~300 km | ~7 hours |
The stretch after Ahmednagar is a two-lane state highway with unmarked speed breakers through every village. The Nagar–Jamkhed and Karmala–Barshi sections are best not driven after sunset, so leave Shirdi by 9 am.
The Sainagar Shirdi–Pandharpur Express (11001) is the only direct train, and it runs three days a week. It leaves Sainagar Shirdi at 5:00 am, halts at Ahmednagar at 6:48 am and Kurduwadi at 11:00 am, and reaches Pandharpur at 12:15 pm. The return, 11002, leaves Pandharpur at 1:00 pm and reaches Shirdi at 8:25 pm on the same three days.
On other days, take the daily Karnataka Express (12628) from Kopargaon at 4:30 pm to Kurduwadi at 9:13 pm, then a bus or taxi for the last 52 km. You reach Pandharpur late at night, so book the room first.
MSRTC bus: ordinary service from Shirdi ST stand, roughly ₹315, about 6 hours 45 minutes.
Pandharpur station to the mandir: about 2 km, an auto costs a few tens of rupees.
The mandir's daily schedule is what the whole plan is built around. Kakad aarti and nitya pooja run 4:00 to 5:30 am, and general darshan runs 6:00 am to 11:15 pm. It pauses twice: 10:45–11:00 am for mahanaivedya and 4:40–5:00 pm for poshakh.
Mukh darshan: about 30 minutes, a separate faster line.
Pad sparsh darshan: 2 to 3 hours on a normal day, 8 hours or more on Ekadashi.
Free darshan pass: the Mandir Samiti issues a free online pass on its official site, bookable up to 8 days ahead, that puts you in a faster line at the Darshan Mandap.
The mukh versus pad sparsh comparison explains which queue suits whom. Dhoop aarti at 6:45 pm is worth catching on Day 1.
With elders: taxi both ways, leave Shirdi after breakfast, book a room within 500 m of the mandir, take mukh darshan on Day 2 if the pad sparsh queue is over two hours.
On a budget: ST bus on Day 1, Bhakta Niwas near the mandir, ST bus back after darshan. It is the slowest but costs under ₹1,000 per head in fares.
On a tight schedule: only if your dates fall on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday take train 11001 out and 11002 back, which gives you a full night in Pandharpur.
Avoid: a same-day return by road. You will reach Pandharpur at the worst hour for the queue and drive back tired.

Stay as close to the mandir as you can, because Day 2 depends on walking to the 4 am queue. The Mandir Samiti's Shri Vitthal Rukmini Bhakta Niwas has non-AC and AC two-bed rooms plus dormitory halls, with a small refundable deposit and paid parking.
Check-in is noon and check-out 11 am, and hot water runs 5 to 8 am only.
Hotels around the mandir and the Chandrabhaga ghat start near ₹700 to ₹1,200 for a basic room and reach ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 for the better ones. Our where to stay in Pandharpur guide lists the areas by walking distance. Book the moment your dates are fixed on any Ekadashi week.
Two days, one night by the Chandrabhaga, and Vitthal's feet before sunrise. Om Sai Ram, Jai Vitthal.
