Mahakal Lok after dark is the best free hour in Ujjain. The laser-and-water light show on Rudrasagar is the one thing in it that now costs money: ₹100 per person since mid-2026, for about 25 minutes. Plan the corridor walk for 6:30 pm, the show after it, and the 10:30 pm Shayan Aarti if you still have energy.
The show runs on a water-screen and laser rig over Rudrasagar, the lake the corridor wraps around. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated it on 25 October 2025; it cost about ₹18 crore to build. For roughly 25 minutes it tells the story of Mahakal, the Shipra and ancient Avantika, with the corridor's pillars as the backdrop.
The facts that matter for your evening:
Fee: ₹100 per person. It was free for its first months. The committee began charging in June 2026, citing running costs of about ₹1.5 lakh a month. Children on a lap do not pay.
Shows: two most evenings, the first around 7:30 pm in Hindi and a second around 8:30 pm. Counter staff confirm the day's slots; on heavy days a show is dropped.
Seating is on the steps facing the lake, first come, so reach the counter 30 minutes early.
No show on days of heavy rain, and sometimes on sawari and festival evenings when the lakefront is cordoned.
The show is a civic spectacle, not a ritual. Do darshan first and treat this as the end of the day.
Mahakal Lok is a 900 m colonnade of sandstone pillars and painted Shiva panels, entered through Nandi Dwar and Pinaki Dwar. Walking it costs nothing. After about 6:30 pm the pillar lighting comes on and the murtis of the Shiva stories along the wall are easiest to read.
A good order for a first evening:
Enter by Nandi Dwar at 6:30 pm, when the heat has gone and the lights are on.
Walk the pillar line to the Triveni Museum end. Allow 30 to 40 minutes with stops.
Buy the light show ticket at the counter and sit by 7:15 pm.
After the show, cross to Harsiddhi, 600 m away, if the 7 pm aarti lamps are still burning.
Elders and anyone with a bad knee can take the e-cart from the gate end. It runs on demand for about ₹20 one way. Phones and cameras are allowed in the corridor; they stop only at the temple's own security line. Our full Mahakal Lok corridor guide covers what each panel shows.
| Item | Cost | When |
|---|---|---|
| Walking the corridor | Free | About 6 am to 10 pm |
| Light and sound show | ₹100 per person | Around 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm |
| E-cart, one way | About ₹20 | On demand, elders first |
| Sandhya Aarti pass | ₹250 per person | Around 7 pm, pre-booked |
| Shayan Aarti pass | ₹250 per person | Around 10:30 pm, pre-booked |
Two aartis fall on either side of the show. Sandhya Aarti is around 7 pm and Shayan Aarti around 10:30 pm. Since 19 February 2026 both need a ₹250 pre-booked pass from the committee; walk-ups watch from the general mandapam only if the hall is not full.
You cannot do Sandhya Aarti and the 7:30 pm show on the same evening. Choose:
Aarti first: book Sandhya Aarti, then catch the 8:30 pm show.
Show first: take the 7:30 pm show, walk the corridor, then book Shayan Aarti at 10:30 pm.
Both passes are booked ahead on the committee's portal. Our guide to Sandhya and Shayan Aarti booking has the slot details.
Do not drive your own car to the gate in the evening. The roads around Harsiddhi and the Mahakal Lok parking jam from 6 pm, and the parking fills by 7 pm on weekends. Leave the car at your hotel or at the big parking off the Indore road and take an e-rickshaw for the last stretch.
Keep these cut-offs in mind:
Last corridor entry is around 10 pm, before Shayan Aarti.
Second show ends around 9 pm. Leaving then, you are back at a Freeganj hotel in 20 minutes.
Shayan Aarti ends near 11 pm. Autos thin out; a waiting taxi matters.
Our Yatris staying on the Indore side usually book a room near Mahakal Lok for the evening and go back to Indore after morning darshan. See where to stay near Mahakal.
With elders: e-cart in, 7:30 pm show from the front steps, e-cart out, bed by 9 pm. Skip Shayan Aarti.
On a budget: walk the corridor at 7 pm and skip the ₹100 show. The lit pillars are the better free sight anyway.
On a tight schedule: darshan at 5 pm, corridor at 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm show, drive to Indore by 10 pm.
Want the full night: Sandhya Aarti pass, 8:30 pm show, Shayan Aarti pass, and a room within a kilometre.
Avoid Monday evenings and Shravan evenings for the show; the lakefront is cordoned for crowd control and shows get cancelled without notice.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
Stay within a kilometre of Nandi Dwar so that an 11 pm finish is a walk, not a search for an auto. The Harsiddhi and Begumbagh lanes have dharamshalas and small hotels; Freeganj has the larger ones about 3 km away. Yatris coming from Indore for the evening alone should fix a return taxi before the show starts.
Walk the pillars at dusk, sit for the show, and let the day end at Mahakal's feet. Har Har Mahadev.
