Pune to Ujjain has one answer for most Yatris: train 22943, which leaves Pune Junction at 3:33 pm every day and halts at Ujjain at 6:25 the next morning. No change, no night on the road, and you are at Mahakaleshwar before the day's queue builds.
Flying to Indore is faster but adds a 55 km road leg, and the drive is a 650 km, 12-to-14-hour day on the Nashik–Dhule highway.
Pune has no overnight train to Ujjain that leaves after dinner. Both direct trains leave in the afternoon, go around through Mumbai's suburbs and the Western line, and arrive the next morning. That is slower than the map suggests, but it is still the most restful way to go.
| Train | Pune departure | Ujjain arrival | Runs | Route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22943 Daund–Indore Express | 3:33 pm | 6:25 am next day | Daily | Lonavala, Kalyan, Vasai Road, Surat, Vadodara, Ratlam |
| 19311 Pune–Indore Express | 5:30 pm | 9:45 am next day | Sun, Wed | via Panvel, Vasai Road, Surat, Ratlam |
22943 starts at Daund at 2:10 pm, so Pune is a mid-way halt with a 10-minute stop. Board at Pune Junction, or at Shivajinagar if the train halts there on your date; check the stop list on IRCTC.
19311 reaches at 9:45 am, three hours later, and only twice a week. Use it when 22943 is waitlisted on a Sunday or Wednesday.
Berth tip: both trains pass Vasai Road around 7:45 pm, when the catering vendors board. Carry dinner from Pune and eat before Kalyan.
Return trains from Ujjain towards Pune leave in the evening, so a two-night trip ends with a second night on the train and no hotel bill on the way home. Timings shift at each timetable change; recheck the week you travel.
Ujjain has no airport. IndiGo flies Pune to Indore nonstop two to three times a day, about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 minutes in the air, and several departures sit in the small hours of the morning.
Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is on the Ujjain side of the city, 55 km from the mandir, which is an hour and a quarter by taxi.
Fly when:
You have only a weekend. Saturday dawn flight, darshan by 10 am, Bhasma Aarti on Sunday, evening flight back.
Elders are travelling. Door to mandir is under five hours, with no station stairs.
Kartik dates are waitlisted. November trains fill weeks out; flights do not.
The weak point is the airport taxi. Prepaid counters quote widely, and a 1 am landing leaves you negotiating in the dark. Our weekend plan from Mumbai or Pune via Indore has the flight-side timings in detail.
The drive is 650 to 665 km and realistically 12 to 14 hours with meals. Pune to Nashik is the slow part, 210 km of mixed road that regularly takes five hours in daytime traffic.
From Nashik you join the Mumbai–Agra highway (NH52) through Dhule and Sendhwa to Indore, then 55 km on to Ujjain.
Leave Pune by 4 am. You clear Nashik before office traffic and reach Dhule for lunch.
Alternative via Shirdi: Ahmednagar, Shirdi, Manmad, Malegaon, Dhule. Similar time, and it lets you take Sai Baba darshan on the way.
Drive only as a group of four or five, or when Omkareshwar and Maheshwar are on the same trip. For two people the train is cheaper and kinder.
Avoid night driving on the Sendhwa–Indore stretch; stop at Dhule if you are late.
The 4 am Bhasma Aarti is the reason most Pune Yatris go. Passes are sold only on the temple's official portal, ₹200 per person, and open about a month ahead. No hotel, agent or tout can book one; anyone promising to is selling a seat that does not exist.
If the date is sold out, you still see Mahakal. The ₹250 Sheeghra Darshan ticket takes a shorter queue through the day, and the evening Sandhya and Shayan aartis need no pass. See the Bhasma Aarti booking guide for the exact steps and the Sheeghra Darshan ticket guide for when it is worth it.

With elderly parents: fly to Indore, taxi to the mandir. Five hours door to door.
On a budget: 22943 sleeper both ways, one night in a bhaktniwas. Well under ₹2,000 a head for travel.
On a tight schedule: Friday 22943, Saturday darshan and Mahakal Lok, Sunday Bhasma Aarti, evening train home.
Family of five: 22943 in 3AC, then a car in Ujjain for Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath.
Avoid Kartik Mondays and the Diwali week around 8 November 2026, when the general queue runs three to four hours.
Day 0: 22943 from Pune at 3:33 pm. Dinner from home, sleep after Surat.
Day 1: Ujjain at 6:25 am. Check in, general or Sheeghra darshan by 9 am. Afternoon Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath. Evening Mahakal Lok and the 10:30 pm Shayan Aarti. Sleep early.
Day 2: Bhasma Aarti at 4 am, Sandipani Ashram after breakfast, evening train towards Pune.
With a third day, add Omkareshwar, 140 km south; our Ujjain and Omkareshwar in two days plan fits around these trains.
Stay within a kilometre of the mandir, so the 2 am walk to the Bhasma Aarti gate is short. The temple's bhaktniwas and the Mahakal Dharamshala are cheapest and fill with the aarti passes, so book them the day your pass confirms.
Freeganj hotels are ten minutes away by auto, with AC and parking for families. Both areas are within ₹100 of the station by auto.
Book the aarti first, the train second and the room third, and Pune to Mahakal is a calm two-night yatra. Har Har Mahadev.
