Two Jyotirlingas in two days is very doable: Mahakaleshwar's Bhasma Aarti before dawn on day one, then a 140 km, roughly 3.5–4 hour drive to Omkareshwar on day two. It works only if the Bhasma Aarti pass is booked well ahead and you reach Omkareshwar before its midday break. Here is the route, the booking steps and the cost.
Mahakaleshwar opens at 4 am and the Bhasma Aarti runs from 4 to 6 am. Yatris with a pass report at the gate between roughly 1 and 2:30 am, so sleep early on the night you arrive and stay within walking distance of the mandir.
After the aarti the day is yours. A sensible order, with the driver or on foot:
6:30–8 am: Breakfast near the temple, then a walk through the Mahakal Lok corridor.
8–10 am: Harsiddhi Mata and Bada Ganesh, both minutes from Mahakal.
10 am–12 pm: Kaal Bhairav and Sandipani Ashram on the northern side.
Afternoon: Rest. Ram Ghat for the evening Kshipra aarti.
If you missed a pass, the ₹250 Shighra Darshan queue (slots from about 6 am to 8 pm) still gets you a comfortable darshan. The queue rules, dress and locker details are in our Mahakaleshwar temple rules guide.
The 2026 system is fully online. There is no counter at the temple any more, and no one at the gate sells a pass.
Open the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple portal (the .mp.gov.in / .nic.in site, not a look-alike).
Choose Bhasma Aarti, your date and the number of Yatris. Advance slots open about 30 days ahead and go fast on Mondays and festival weeks.
Pay ₹200 per person and download the pass. The name must match the photo ID you carry.
Missed it? An online tatkal quota releases the morning before the aarti date. Check the portal for the exact release hour and be logged in early.
Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide walks through the portal screens if you have not done it before.
Leave Ujjain by 7 am. The route everyone uses goes through Indore: the four-lane Ujjain–Indore road, then the Indore–Khandwa road through Simrol, the Choral ghat, Barwaha and Mortakka.
| Leg | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ujjain → Indore | about 55 km | 1–1.5 hrs |
| Indore → Omkareshwar | about 80 km | 2–2.5 hrs |
| Whole drive | about 140 km | 3.5–4 hrs |
Choral ghat is still a winding two-lane stretch; the three tunnels being built there are expected to open around the end of 2026. Until then, allow the full four hours and a tea stop at Barwaha.
The Jyotirlinga sits on Mandhata island, reached by a footbridge or a short boat crossing (₹30–50 per person). Temple hours are 5 am to 9:30 pm, with the bhog break 12:20–1:15 pm, a short shringar closure at 4 pm and Shayan Aarti at 8:30 pm.
Three things to fit in, in this order:
Omkareshwar darshan: the free line moves in an hour or two on weekdays. A ₹300 Shighra Darshan ticket buys a two-hour slot; on Saturdays and Sundays it is sold only for 7–9 am.
Mamleshwar (Amareshwar): on the mainland bank, about half a kilometre back across the bridge. No ticket. Many pujaris count the Jyotirlinga darshan complete only after this.
Parikrama: about 7 km around the island, 2–3.5 hours, passing Siddhanath and Gauri Somnath. Start before 3 pm; it includes a climb.

Prices below are what aggregator cab sites and hotel platforms showed in early October 2026. Treat them as ranges, not quotes.
| Item | Range |
|---|---|
| Bhasma Aarti pass | ₹200 per person |
| Mahakal Shighra Darshan | ₹250 per person |
| Omkareshwar Shighra Darshan | ₹300 per person |
| Sedan, Ujjain → Omkareshwar one way | about ₹1,700–2,700 |
| SUV / Innova one way | about ₹3,300–3,500 |
| Innova, two-day round trip | from about ₹12,000 |
| Budget room near Mahakal | about ₹800–1,500 a night |
| Boat crossing at Omkareshwar | ₹30–50 per person |
Per-km rates run about ₹10–12 for a sedan and ₹16–19 for an Innova, usually with tolls included. Ask whether the driver's night halt is in the fare if you stay at Omkareshwar.
With elderly parents: book Shighra Darshan at both temples, skip the full parikrama, and stay the night at Omkareshwar rather than driving back the same evening.
On a budget: Ujjain–Indore–Omkareshwar by bus is cheap but needs two changes; the Omkareshwar Road station at Mortakka is 12 km from the temple.
On a tight schedule: Bhasma Aarti, leave by 7 am, darshan by 11:30 am, return to Indore airport the same night.
Avoid: arriving at Omkareshwar at 11:45 am; it closes at 12:20 pm and you lose an hour.
Avoid: Shravan Mondays (3, 10, 17, 24 August 2026) unless the crowd is the point. Our best-time guide for this trip has the month-by-month picture.

Night one must be in Ujjain, within a kilometre of Mahakaleshwar, because the Bhasma Aarti reporting time is before 2:30 am. Night two can be Omkareshwar itself if you want the Shayan Aarti, or Indore if you fly out early.
Two Jyotirlingas, one drive, and a sunrise aarti you will remember for years. Har Har Mahadev.
