The Shipra aarti at Ram Ghat, Ujjain, begins at sunset every evening: around 6:00 pm from October to February and around 7:00 pm from March to September, lasting 30–45 minutes. The ghat is about 1 km, a ten-minute walk, from Mahakaleshwar and 3 km from Ujjain Junction.
This guide gives the timing by season, exactly where to sit, and how to fit it after Mahakal darshan.
There is no fixed clock time. The aarti is tied to sunset, and the pujaris light the lamps as the sky goes orange over the Shipra. Travel sites print windows from 5:30 pm to 7:45 pm because they are quoting different months.
| Months | Sunset in Ujjain | Aarti begins | Be seated by |
|---|---|---|---|
| October–November | about 5:50–6:05 pm | about 6:00–6:15 pm | 5:30 pm |
| December–January | about 5:40–5:50 pm | about 5:45–6:00 pm | 5:15 pm |
| February–March | about 6:10–6:35 pm | about 6:15–6:45 pm | 5:45 pm |
| April–June | about 6:50–7:10 pm | about 7:00–7:30 pm | 6:30 pm |
| July–September | about 6:40–7:05 pm | about 6:45–7:15 pm | 6:15 pm |
The aarti itself runs 30–45 minutes. On Kartik Purnima, Shivratri evenings and the Shravan Mondays it runs longer and the steps fill an hour earlier.
Ram Ghat is a long flight of stone steps on the east bank, with the aarti platform near the centre, in front of the Ram mandir. The steps on either side of that platform fill first, because the lamps face them.
Best for the ritual itself: the steps within 20 metres of the central platform, three to five rows up from the water. Arrive 45 minutes early.
Best for photographs: the opposite bank, Datt Akhara ghat, across the footbridge. You see the whole lit ghat reflected in the Shipra, but the chants are faint.
With elders: the upper steps near the road, which are flat and have a railing. You can leave without pushing through.
Avoid: the lowest two steps. They are wet, slippery and crowded by Yatris doing snan and deep daan.
Sit, do not stand; the crowd behind you is seated. Leave shoes on the upper steps, not at the water.
The ghat is about 1 km from Mahakaleshwar, an 8–10 minute walk through the Harsiddhi lane. Harsiddhi Mata mandir is about 300 metres from the ghat, so most Yatris take that darshan on the way. An e-rickshaw from the temple gate costs ₹10–20.
From Ujjain Junction the ghat is about 3 km. Autos do not use meters; agree a price before you sit. Our Mahakal Sandhya and Shayan Aarti guide shows how the 7 pm temple aarti clashes with the ghat, and which to pick.
The aarti is a Ganga-aarti style ritual to Maa Shipra: conch, bells, tiered brass lamps swung in unison by a line of pujaris on the platform, and Yatris floating leaf-boat lamps as deep daan. It has been performed daily at Ram Ghat since 2015.
Until this year the Shri Tirth Kshetra Panda Samiti, the hereditary tirth purohits of the ghat, ran it. On 5 August 2026 the district administration transferred the aarti to the Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee, whose batuks now perform it. The purohits responded with a jal satyagraha in the river and a national dharma sabha on 9 September 2026.
For a Yatri the practical facts are unchanged: the aarti still happens every evening, in the same place, at sunset. You may see a protest on the steps; it has been peaceful towards visitors.
Kartik Purnima: thousands of flour lamps on the water, the biggest deep daan of the year. Our Kartik Purnima at Ujjain post has the 2026 date and plan.
Shravan–Bhadrapad Mondays: the Mahakal sawari ends at Ram Ghat with jal abhishek in the afternoon, and the evening aarti follows a packed ghat.
Simhastha 2028: the shahi snan happens on these steps. Expect the ghat to be rebuilt and barricaded through 2027.
Any Monday: busier than other days, like everything in Ujjain.
With elders: upper steps, winter months, taxi waiting above. The walk from Mahakal is fine; the climb back up the steps in a crowd is not.
On a budget: walk from Mahakal via Harsiddhi, sit mid-steps, walk back. The whole evening costs nothing.
On a tight schedule: skip the Mahakal Sandhya Aarti, do the ghat aarti, then eat near Harsiddhi. One evening, two temples, the river.
For the view: Datt Akhara side, across the bridge, 30 minutes early.
Avoid arriving by car to the ghat road itself after 5:30 pm on a festival evening. It is barricaded, and you walk the last 500 metres anyway.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
Stay between Mahakal and Harsiddhi, which puts the ghat under ten minutes on foot and the 4 am Bhasma Aarti gate the same. The lanes are covered in our where to stay for Bhasma Aarti guide; the same rooms serve the evening aarti.
Rooms on the Ram Ghat road itself are few and noisy on festival nights. Choose the temple side.
Sit three rows up, light one lamp, and let the Shipra carry it. Har Har Mahadev.
