Ujjain's main temples fall into two clusters, and the order that saves backtracking is simple: Mahakal first at dawn, the north-bank temples before noon, Chintaman Ganesh after lunch, and Ram Ghat at sunset. The whole loop is roughly 35–45 km and takes 9–10 hours by car, including the Mahakal queue.
The reason order matters is that three temples on the north bank shut for the afternoon. Get them wrong and you drive the same 6 km twice and still miss one.
Everything sits within 7 km of Mahakaleshwar, but not in the same direction. The centre is walkable: Harsiddhi is about 500 m from Mahakal, Bade Ganesh is next door, and Ram Ghat on the Shipra about a kilometre away.
The second cluster is across the river to the north: Gadkalika and the Bhartrihari caves side by side about 3.5–5 km out, Sandipani Ashram at the foot of the Mangalnath road about 4.5 km out, Mangalnath and Siddhavat on the Shipra bank about 6 km out, and Kal Bhairav in Bhairavgarh about 5.5 km out.
Chintaman Ganesh stands alone, 6–7 km west across the Shipra on the Fatehabad road. It is the one temple you cannot chain to the others, so it gets the afternoon, when it is open and the north bank is not.
Hours below are from current listings, not from the temples' own notices, and several sources disagree by an hour. The closures are the part to trust.
| Temple | Open | Afternoon closure | Time needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mahakaleshwar | about 4 AM–11 PM | none | 1–2 h with queue |
| Harsiddhi Mata | from 5 AM | none reported | 30 min |
| Gadkalika | 7 AM–12 PM, 4–8 PM | 12–4 PM | 15–20 min |
| Sandipani Ashram | from about 6 AM | listed shut about 12:30–4 PM | 20 min |
| Mangalnath | from 4–6 AM | listed shut about 12 or 1 to 4 PM | 30 min, longer for Bhat pooja |
| Siddhavat | 6 AM–8 PM | none | 20–30 min |
Start with Mahakal while the queue is short. Right after the 4–6 AM Bhasma aarti, general darshan via the Mahakal Lok takes about 45–90 minutes on a weekday and far longer on a Monday. The ₹250 Sheeghra darshan ticket cuts it to under an hour on busy days.
| Time | Stop | Why now |
|---|---|---|
| 6:00–8:00 | Mahakaleshwar | shortest queue of the day |
| 8:00–8:45 | Harsiddhi, Bade Ganesh | on foot, before the car |
| 9:00–9:45 | Gadkalika, Bhartrihari caves | both shut at 12 |
| 9:45–10:15 | Sandipani Ashram | adjacent to the Mangalnath road |
| 10:15–11:15 | Mangalnath | Bhat pooja counter runs 10 AM–12 PM |
| 11:15–11:45 | Siddhavat | riverbank, open all day |
| 11:45–12:45 | Kal Bhairav | open through the afternoon |
| 1:00–2:30 | Lunch near Mangalnath road | thali restaurants on the same stretch |
Mangalnath is the birthplace of Mars, and its Bhat pooja costs ₹1,100 at the temple committee counter; third-party agents quote far more. Tuesdays, and Bhaum Pradosh above all, are its crowded days. Kal Bhairav takes a liquor offering; the pujari pours it at the idol's lips and returns part of the bottle as prasad.
Ujjain's standard local product is the 8-hour, 80 km package, which fits this loop with margin.
Sedan: roughly ₹1,500–2,200 for the day; hatchbacks a little less.
SUV: about ₹2,300–3,200, the right choice for six people or for elders who need the step-free door.
Full-day auto: about ₹800–1,200, agreed in advance because autos here do not run on the meter. Fine for the north bank, tiring for the Chintaman leg.
Temple committee bus: a ten-temple Ujjain Darshan bus at ₹100 was announced in July 2026; we could not retrieve its temple list or timings, so ask at the Mahakal counters.
Park at the Triveni Museum multilevel or the Mahakal Lok parking; the small temple lot holds about 125 cars. Expect dust and detours at Mahakal's main gate, where road widening from 12 to 24 m began on 30 September 2026 for Simhastha 2028. Our full-day taxi guide describes a typical day with a driver.
With elders: drop Gadkalika and the caves, which involve steps, and keep Mahakal, Harsiddhi, Mangalnath, Kal Bhairav and Ram Ghat. Use an SUV and the Sheeghra darshan ticket.
Tight schedule, half a day: Mahakal at 6, then the north bank by 9, finish at Kal Bhairav by 12:30. Skip Chintaman.
On a Tuesday: Mangalnath is at its busiest; go there first after Mahakal, or read our Mangalnath guide and do it on another day.
For the lamps: Harsiddhi's two deep stambhs are lit in the evening and fully on Navratri, with a long waiting list to sponsor a lighting; our Harsiddhi page has the details.
Avoid starting the north bank after 10:30, and avoid a Monday for Mahakal unless you hold a pass. For Kal Bhairav's rules and queue, see Kal Bhairav temple.

Sleep within a kilometre of Mahakaleshwar. The loop begins and ends there, and a 6 AM start is only pleasant if the walk to the gate is short.
Dharamshalas and ashrams near the temple run roughly ₹100–600.
Basic hotels within a kilometre start around ₹500–1,200.
Mid-range rooms at about ₹1,200–3,500; MP Tourism's two properties in Freeganj are a 10-minute drive.
Book early for Mondays, Shravan and Mahashivratri, when Mahakal's crowd fills the town.
Get the order right and the day flows from one gate to the next without a wasted kilometre. Har Har Mahadev.
