A full day of Ujjain local darshan by taxi covers seven temples in about 8 hours and 45 km: Mahakaleshwar with Mahakal Lok first, then Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Sandipani Ashram and Chintaman Ganesh. This guide gives the order, the time each stop takes, and what changes when you hold a Bhasma Aarti pass.
The seven stops fall into two groups. Three sit within a kilometre of each other in the old city. The other four lie on the edges of Ujjain, each in a different direction.
A good day finishes the close group first, then uses the car for the far ones. The Ujjain temple darshan package runs in this order:
| Time | Stop | How far |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 am | Pickup at your hotel or Ujjain Junction | — |
| 7:15 am | Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and Mahakal Lok | — |
| 9:45 am | Harsiddhi Mata | about 0.5 km from Mahakaleshwar |
| 10:15 am | Ram Ghat on the Shipra | about 1 km from Mahakaleshwar |
| 11:00 am | Breakfast or early lunch | in the city |
| 12:00 noon | Kal Bhairav | about 5.5 to 7 km from Mahakaleshwar |
| 1:00 pm | Mangalnath | about 6 km from Mahakaleshwar |
| 1:45 pm | Sandipani Ashram | about 5 km from Mahakaleshwar |
Mahakaleshwar goes first for one reason. Its queue is the only part of the day nobody can predict, and every later stop moves with it.
These are the times the plan allows, on an ordinary weekday:
Mahakaleshwar and Mahakal Lok — about 2 hours. General darshan is free. Sheeghra Darshan, about ₹250 per person, shortens the queue. Mahakal Lok has no entry fee.
Harsiddhi Mata — about 30 minutes. A Shakti Peetha, known for its two tall lamp towers, which are lit in the evening.
Ram Ghat — about 45 minutes. Time to sit by the Shipra. The aarti here is an evening one.
Kal Bhairav — about 45 minutes, after the longest drive of the day.
Mangalnath — about 30 minutes. It stands above the Shipra and is traditionally held to be the birthplace of Mangal.
Sandipani Ashram — about 30 minutes. Tradition places the schooling of Krishna, Balarama and Sudama here.
Chintaman Ganesh — about 30 minutes. An old Ganesh temple on the city's edge, and the last darshan.
For queue types and counters at the main temple, read our Ujjain darshan timings and tickets guide. The corridor has its own Mahakal Lok guide.
The first three stops need no car at all. Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat are a walk or a short e-rickshaw hop from Mahakaleshwar. Local guides put those shared hops at roughly ₹10 to ₹50 a ride.
The outer four are where an auto day slows down. Autos in Ujjain usually run without a meter, so every ride is a fresh fare to agree. Seven stops means at least six separate rides.
At each outer temple you also choose: pay the auto to wait, or let it go and find another when you come out. If each change costs even 10 to 15 minutes, that is an hour or more of the day spent standing on the road.
| Auto by auto | One car for the day | |
|---|---|---|
| Rides to arrange | 6 or more | 1 |
| Fare | Agreed before every ride | One fixed fare for the whole car |
| Waiting at temples | Ask each time, or find a new auto | Included at every stop |
| Tolls and parking | Sorted ride by ride | Included |
| Pickup and drop | You find the first and last ride | Hotel or Ujjain Junction |
Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar runs from about 4 am to 6 am, every day. Entry is by pass only. The pass is booked with the temple, on its official site, and costs about ₹200 per person.
Booking is reported to open about 30 days ahead, with a small quota released one day before. Carry the same original photo ID you used while booking. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide has the steps.
Pass holders are asked to report well before the aarti; guides quote between 1 am and 2 am. So the day no longer starts at 7:00 am.
There is a second way to bend the plan. If you want the evening aarti at Ram Ghat, start later; the whole day shifts and ends after the aarti. Published aarti times vary, so confirm the hour locally that day.
The outer temples rarely hold anyone up. Mahakaleshwar does. Expect a longer queue, and later stops pushed back, on:
Mondays and weekends, through the year
Diwali, on 8 November 2026, and the days around it
Kartik Purnima, on 24 November 2026, when Yatris come for a dip in the Shipra at Ram Ghat
Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan
On these days, ask for an earlier pickup. Crowds on a far larger scale come with the Simhastha Kumbh in 2028.
With elders: the car. There is little climbing on this circuit, and the drop is close to each temple.
Two Yatris, only the old-city three: walk and use e-rickshaws. You do not need a car for Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat alone.
Train to catch the same evening: the car, with the drop at Ujjain Junction around 3:15 pm. Keep a margin and pick a train well after that.
A family group: larger vehicles are available for 7, 12 and 20 guests.
What to avoid: starting all seven after 9 am on a Monday. The Mahakaleshwar queue then eats the afternoon stops.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
For a 7:00 am pickup, any hotel in the city works; the car comes to your door. Two cases deserve more thought:
Bhasma Aarti pass holders should stay within walking distance of Mahakaleshwar, since reporting is in the middle of the night.
Late-night train arrivals are easier near Ujjain Junction, which is also a pickup point.
Rooms near the temple fill first around Diwali and Kartik Purnima, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Seven temples, one city, one unhurried day — start early and let Mahakaleshwar set the pace. Jai Shri Mahakal. Har Har Mahadev.
