Ujjain to Omkareshwar is about 140 km and 3 to 4 hours by road, and the only sensible route runs back through Indore and over the Choral ghat. There is no train for this leg, and buses take 4 hours. Here is when to leave Mahakal and how to reach Omkareshwar before the evening aarti.
There is no direct highway between Ujjain and Omkareshwar. Every vehicle, including the buses, goes back to Indore first. Ujjain to Indore is about 55 km on the four-lane highway, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic. A six-lane upgrade under way in 2026 promises about 40 minutes once finished.
From Indore the road is NH 347BG, the Indore–Khandwa highway: about 80 km and roughly 2.5 hours. It climbs out of Indore past Simrol, drops through the Choral ghat, crosses the plain at Barwaha and reaches the Narmada at the Mortakka bridge, where you turn for Omkareshwar.
In peak Indore traffic, drivers coming from Ujjain often swing via Dewas and the eastern outskirts to skip the city centre. It adds a few kilometres and saves 20 to 30 minutes at the wrong hour.
Mahakaleshwar opens at 4 AM, and the Bhasma aarti runs 4 to 6 AM on a pre-booked pass. On an ordinary weekday the general queue takes about an hour; the Shighra darshan ticket is ₹250 and cuts that to under an hour. Our Mahakal timings and pass guide covers the booking.
| Leave Ujjain | Reach Indore outskirts | Reach Omkareshwar | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:30 AM (after Bhasma aarti) | 8:45 AM | 11:30 AM | Midday darshan, afternoon to walk the island |
| 10:00 AM (after general darshan) | 11:15 AM | 2:00 PM | Mamleshwar, then Omkareshwar before the evening aarti |
| 1:00 PM (after lunch) | 2:15 PM | 5:00 PM | Evening darshan only; the ghat in fading light |
The 10 AM departure is the sweet spot. You keep a relaxed Mahakal morning and still reach Omkareshwar with four hours of daylight. Leaving after 1 PM means the Choral ghat near dusk and a queue at Omkareshwar at the same time as everyone else.
Bus: about 25 buses a day leave Ujjain for Omkareshwar, almost all from Nanakheda bus stand, the first around 4:30 AM and the last late at night. Private operators dominate, and the trip takes about 4 hours with a halt in Indore.
You are dropped at the Omkareshwar new bus stand, from where the temple is a walk through the bazaar. Book a morning seat the day before in Kartik season.
Train: do not plan on one. Omkareshwar Road station at Mortakka, about 12 km from the temple, has had no passenger trains from the Indore (Mhow) side since 30 January 2023, while the metre-gauge line is converted.
As of late 2025 Western Railway's target for the Mhow–Khandwa section was March 2028. Only a Sanawad–Khandwa MEMU runs on the far side, useless from Ujjain.
Shared taxi: from Indore, shared cabs leave for Omkareshwar from near Gangwal bus stand. From Ujjain you would first ride to Indore, so the saving over a private car is small for a family of four.
The Indore–Khandwa highway is being four-laned, and the ghat between Simrol and Balwada is the slow section. Three tunnels are being bored here: Bherughat (575 m), Baigram (480 m) and Choral ghat (550 m). Until they open, expect single-lane diversions and crawling trucks on the climb.
At the Narmada, the old Mortakka bridge is more than 75 years old. A new six-lane crossing was due to open in stages through 2026; we could not confirm this week which lanes are live, so ask your driver and allow 15 minutes of margin.
The ghat section is also why we tell Yatris not to drive it after dark on a first visit. Daylight, a local driver and no hurry is the right combination. Our Indore to Omkareshwar guide has the Indore-side detail.
Omkareshwar is two temples on two banks of the Narmada. Mamleshwar stands on the south bank near Gomukh ghat, where the road and parking end. The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is on Mandhata island across the river, reached by the footbridge or a short boat ride.
Arriving at 2 PM, do Mamleshwar first; it is a ten-minute walk from the parking and usually without a queue. Then cross the bridge for Omkareshwar. General darshan is free; a ₹300 special darshan line runs from a counter near the entrance on busy days. Our Omkareshwar timings guide lists every aarti.
Take the boat one way and walk back the other, so you see the ghats from the water. The 108-foot Statue of Oneness of Adi Shankaracharya, unveiled on 21 September 2023 on Mandhata hill, is visible from the bridge and worth the climb if you have an hour.
Family with elders: private car, 10 AM departure, Mamleshwar first. The footbridge is manageable; the boat steps are not for everyone.
On a budget, travelling alone: the Nanakheda bus around 6 AM after an early general darshan. You reach Omkareshwar by 10 AM and still have the day.
On a tight schedule: Bhasma aarti pass at Mahakal, leave Ujjain 7:30 AM, Omkareshwar by 11:30, back in Indore for an evening flight. Our which Jyotirlinga first post explains why this order works.
First visit, nervous about the ghat: do not drive yourself. Hire a driver who does the Khandwa road weekly.
What to avoid: leaving Ujjain after lunch on a weekend, when the Indore bypass and the ghat both slow down, and arriving at Omkareshwar in the dark looking for parking.
Kartik is Omkareshwar's busiest month after Shravan. Kartik Purnima falls on 24 November 2026 and brings the Narmada snan crowds; the week around it doubles the bridge queue. Diwali on 8 November 2026 and the Monday Sawaris at Mahakal in Kartik also push Ujjain departures later in the morning.
From December the Narmada mornings are cold and misty, and the ghat road can hold fog until 9 AM. Carry a shawl for the boat and keep the 10 AM departure rather than an earlier one.
If your darshan runs into the evening, sleep in Omkareshwar near Gomukh ghat and take the 5 AM Mangal aarti before driving back; the island is at its quietest then.
If you must be in Indore for a morning train or flight, leave Omkareshwar by 6 PM so the ghat is behind you before full dark.
Two Jyotirlingas in one day is a real yatra when the clock is respected. Har Har Mahadev.
