If you have a gap between a flight, a train and the start of a Maharashtra yatra, Mumbai has enough within half an hour of the airport to fill it well. Siddhivinayak Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, Haji Ali Dargah and the Gateway of India are the four stops most Yatris fold into a layover, in that order of priority.
Siddhivinayak is the stop worth protecting when the gap is short. The temple sits in Prabhadevi, about 8-10 km from the airport, and Metro Line 3 (the Aqua Line) now runs directly from both T1 and T2 to Siddhivinayak station, a 2-minute walk from the gate — about 20 minutes door to door.
By taxi the same run takes 15-20 minutes in light traffic, but can stretch past 40 minutes during the evening rush (5-9 PM). The temple is open 5:30 AM-9:50 PM Wednesday to Monday; on Tuesday it opens at 3:15 AM and stays open past midnight for Lord Ganesha's day.
Darshan takes 30-60 minutes on an ordinary day. Skip Tuesday if you can — the queue there commonly runs 4-8 hours, though a paid-darshan line cuts that to roughly 20-45 minutes. Dress modestly: no shorts or sleeveless tops.
Mahalaxmi Temple sits on Bhulabhai Desai Road, facing the sea, about 7 km from CSMT and 15-20 minutes by taxi in normal traffic. It's open daily 6:00 AM-10:00 PM and entry is free — no ticket, no separate line to skip.
Time your visit around the aarti windows or you'll find the doors closed for pooja. Darshan pauses during the morning aarti (6:45-7:30 AM), the naivedya offering (11:45 AM-12:20 PM) and two evening aartis (6:15-6:40 PM and 7:20-7:45 PM).
Mahalaxmi railway station on the Western Line is a short walk from the gate, useful coming from Mumbai Central rather than by road.
Haji Ali Dargah is technically open 6:00 AM-10:00 PM, but the causeway to reach it is walkable only at low tide — at high tide the lane floods and the shrine sits offshore. As a rough guide, mornings around 8-11 AM and afternoons 3:30-7 PM tend to be dry.
Tide times shift daily, so check before you spend your gap hours getting there.
Men and women enter through separate doors — men from the south, women from the west — and women are expected to cover their heads. Budget 30-40 minutes each way by taxi from the airport, or 10-20 minutes from Mumbai Central.
A quick search for "Mumbai tide timing today" before you leave the airport saves a wasted trip to a flooded causeway.
The Gateway of India is open 24 hours and free to enter, which makes it tempting — but it's also the farthest stop, 24-28 km from the airport and 45-60+ minutes by taxi, longer in the 7-11 AM or 5-9 PM rush. From CSMT it's close, just 2-3 km, a 10-minute taxi ride or a flat 20-minute walk.
It earns its place only with 5 hours or more, since the drive alone eats your gap both ways. Most visitors spend under 2 hours here including photos at the arch and the harbour.
| Sight | From Airport (taxi) | From CSMT / Mumbai Central | Minimum time needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siddhivinayak Temple | 15-20 min (up to 40 in rush) / ~20 min by metro | 25-30 min | 1-1.5 hrs |
| Mahalaxmi Temple | 30-40 min | 15-20 min | 45 min-1 hr |
| Haji Ali Dargah | 30-40 min | 10-20 min | 45 min (tide-dependent) |
| Gateway of India | 45-60+ min | ~10 min | 1-2 hrs |
With 2-3 hours, do one thing well.
2-3 hrs, tight schedule: Siddhivinayak only, via the Aqua Line metro.
4-5 hrs: Siddhivinayak + Mahalaxmi Temple, both on the western side.
5+ hrs, relaxed: add Haji Ali (tide permitting) or the Gateway, not both.
Landing on a Tuesday: go before 7 AM, or substitute Mahalaxmi Temple instead.
Avoid stacking all four sights unless you have 7+ hours clear — traffic between South Mumbai and the airport turns a comfortable layover into a missed flight.
Traffic, not distance, is what eats a Mumbai layover. The road link between the airport, Siddhivinayak and Mahalaxmi can double in time between 5-9 PM on a weekday.
The Aqua Line metro skips all of that for the Siddhivinayak run, on a flat fare. Past Mahalaxmi, a taxi is still the only door-to-door option, since the metro doesn't yet reach Haji Ali or the Gateway. Keep bags light enough to carry through darshan queues.
If your connection stretches past 8-10 hours, book a room near the airport rather than chasing all four sights in one go. Our guide on where to stay in Mumbai before your yatra covers options near both terminals and near CSMT.
Most Yatris passing through Mumbai continue on to a Jyotirlinga circuit or to Pandharpur the same week. See our Mumbai to Pandharpur guide or the 3 Jyotirlinga from Mumbai plan before booking a room for the wrong night.
Whether you have three hours or eight, Mumbai's temples fit around a flight far more easily than most travelers expect. Ganpati Bappa Morya.
