Mahalakshmi Temple in Kolhapur opens for darshan from around 5 AM to past 10 PM, with aarti timed to the day's rhythm. From Pune it's roughly 233 km — about five hours by road — making this a real weekend trip, not a rushed day run. This guide covers timings, the best departure window, and when the crowd builds up.
General darshan at the Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) Temple runs from around 5 AM to past 10 PM, though the first Kakad Aarti and Padyapuja begin near 5 AM sharp. The main morning aarti follows between 5:30 and 6 AM, and evening aartis are spaced through the night, roughly 6:30 PM, 8 PM and again near 10 PM.
Even on an ordinary weekday the queue can run one to two hours, so arriving before 5:30 AM or after 8 PM gives the calmest darshan. General darshan is free. Paid sevas — Padya Pooja, Kumkum Archana, Panchamrut Abhishek and Mahabhishek — run roughly ₹350 to ₹1,100. Check mahalaxmikolhapur.com, the trust's own site, before a festival weekend.
Kolhapur sits about 233 km from Pune on NH48, the same highway that runs on toward Bengaluru, via Satara, Karad and Ichalkaranji. By car or taxi that's 4.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on traffic near Satara and the stretch after the Kolhapur bypass.
| Mode | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Self-drive / private taxi | ~4.5–5.5 hrs | NH48 via Satara, Karad, Ichalkaranji |
| Vande Bharat Express | ~5 hrs 15 min | Runs only Mon, Thu, Sat |
| Koyna Express | ~7 hrs 45 min | Daily, leaves Pune 12:40 PM |
| MSRTC Shivneri / Shivshahi bus | ~5 hrs 40 min | Several departures through the day |
The Pune–Kolhapur Vande Bharat Express covers it in about 5 hours 15 minutes, but runs only three days a week — Monday, Thursday, Saturday — leaving Pune at 2:15 PM. The daily Koyna Express is slower, departing at 12:40 PM and reaching past 8 PM. MSRTC's Shivneri and Shivshahi buses run through the day, taking roughly 5 hours 40 minutes.
For a car or private taxi, leaving Pune by 6 AM on Saturday gets you to Kolhapur by late morning, in time to check in, rest, and take a calmer post-lunch or evening darshan rather than joining the dawn crowd cold. That first evening is also when the sunset aartis run, so plan dinner around them, not before.
Sunday morning before 7:30 AM is the quietest darshan of the trip — do that first, then fit in Rankala Lake or the New Palace before lunch. Start the drive back by 2 to 3 PM to miss the worst of Sunday evening traffic near Pune and be home by 7–8 PM.
Rankala Lake is barely 2 km from the temple — an easy evening walk with a promenade and a chaupati for street food, good for a Saturday-evening cooldown after darshan. The New Palace, the old royal family's residence-turned-museum, pairs well with the same half-day.
Panhala Fort sits about 20 km northwest and is worth a full half-day if your Sunday isn't packed — Teen Darwaza, Sajja Kothi and the valley views from the ramparts. Treat it as an optional extension, not a must, if you're driving back the same afternoon.
Sharad Navratri 2026 runs October 11 to 19, with Vijayadashami on October 20 — crowds at Mahalakshmi Temple can run into lakhs on the peak days, and abhishek slots fill fast. If your weekend falls in that window, book any seva online in advance at mahalaxmikolhapur.com rather than showing up and queuing.
Kirnotsav — the evenings when the setting sun's rays fall directly on the Goddess through a temple window — falls November 9 to 11 this year, drawing dense evening crowds for a narrow few minutes. Outside festival dates, an ordinary Saturday is manageable if you follow the early-morning or late-evening windows above.
With elders: take the Vande Bharat Express if your dates match its Monday/Thursday/Saturday run — five seated hours beat five hours on the ghats, and the station is a short taxi ride from the temple.
On a budget: MSRTC's Shivshahi or ordinary buses cost far less than a taxi or the Vande Bharat's chair-car fare, though you lose the freedom to stop at Panhala on the way.
On a tight schedule: a private taxi leaving Pune at dawn is the only option that gets you to late-morning darshan and home the same Sunday night without skipping the quiet windows.
Avoid: driving into Kolhapur after dark on a festival evening — parking near the temple core fills early, and you'll end up walking further than planned.
Most yatris base themselves within walking distance of the temple's western side, where lodges cluster along Bhausingji Road and near Mahadwar Road — useful for reaching the early-morning aarti on foot. Kolhapur's hotel belt near Rankala Lake and the railway station suits a two-night weekend better, with a wider choice of AC rooms.
Kolhapur rewards a full weekend more than a rushed day trip — the temple, the lake and the fort each deserve unhurried time. Plan the timings above, and darshan will be the easy part. Jai Ambabai.
