Maghi Ganesh Jayanti 2027 falls on Wednesday 10 February 2027, and Morgaon's Mayureshwar, the first of the Ashtavinayak, is at its busiest that one day each year. Pune to Morgaon is about 65 km via Saswad and Jejuri, 1.5–2 hours when the road is clear.
Here is the tithi window, the Chinchwad palkhi, and a plan for darshan before the madhyahna pooja.
Ganesh Jayanti is Magha Shukla Chaturthi, the birthday tithi as distinct from the Bhadrapada Ganesh Chaturthi of the public festival. In 2027 the Chaturthi tithi begins at 12:49 pm on Tuesday 9 February and ends at 1:34 pm on Wednesday 10 February, so the observance falls on the Wednesday.
The madhyahna Ganesha pooja window for Pune runs about 11:40 am to 1:58 pm, which is when the temple's own pooja and the heaviest crowd coincide. Nearby dates to know:
Magha Shukla Pratipada, Sunday 7 February 2027: the Magha utsav period begins
Magha Shukla Shashti, around Friday 12 February 2027: the Shashti observance that closes the utsav at Morgaon
Ratha Saptami, Saturday 13 February 2027
For contrast, Maghi Ganesh Jayanti 2026 was on Thursday 22 January, so the 2027 date is almost three weeks later.
The temple is run by the Chinchwad Devasthan Trust, which also manages Theur and Siddhatek. On a normal day darshan runs about 5 am to 10 pm, with kakad aarti at 5 am, the shodashopachar pooja around 7:30 am, the madhyan aarti at noon and shej aarti at 10 pm.
Listings disagree on an afternoon break, so do not plan a 2 pm arrival.
On Jayanti the trust performs special poojas and abhishek, Ganesh stotra recitation and deepdan in the evening. The mahaprasad lunch, usually 12 noon to 2 pm, feeds thousands. The temple itself is the one you remember: 50-foot walls with four corner minarets, four gates, and a black-stone Nandi facing Mayureshwar from outside the main door.
| Day | Who comes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal weekday | Ashtavinayak circuit Yatris | 20–40 minute queue |
| Sankashti Chaturthi | Pune day-trippers | 1–2 hours, evening moonrise crowd |
| Maghi Ganesh Jayanti | Palkhi, Pune, Baramati, Solapur | Queue from the street; several hours by mid-morning |
Morgaon is the heart of the Ganapatya tradition because of Morya Gosavi, the saint whose samadhi is at Chinchwad and whose name lives in "Ganpati Bappa Morya". His palkhi, with the Mangalmurti of Chinchwad, walks to Morgaon twice a year, on Bhadrapada Ganesh Chaturthi and on Maghi Ganesh Jayanti.
The Jayanti programme is the "bhet", the meeting of Mayureshwar and Morya Gosavi's palkhi at Morgaon on Chaturthi itself. Thousands walk the roughly 90 km from Chinchwad through Pune, Saswad and Jejuri. On the Bhadrapada pattern the palkhi stays two days at Morgaon before returning, which keeps the village full through Shashti.
If you want the palkhi rather than the queue, stand on the Jejuri–Morgaon road on the morning of 10 February and watch it come in, then take darshan in the evening when the line is shorter.
The road is Hadapsar, Dive Ghat, Saswad, Jejuri, then the Jejuri–Morgaon–Baramati road. It is about 65 km, 1.5–2 hours normally; on Jayanti allow 2.5 hours and expect police to hold cars outside the village.
Taxi: leave by 5 am; the driver drops you at the barricade and parks where directed. Morgaon bus stand is 450 m from the temple, so the walk is short.
MSRTC: Swargate–Baramati buses run via Saswad, Jejuri and Morgaon through the day, about two hours; expect them full on Jayanti.
Train: Jejuri is the nearest station, 17 km away, with autos onward.
The Ashtavinayak yatra from Pune in traditional order begins and ends at Morgaon; Jayanti is the one day that circuit should not start here.
With elderly parents: go on Tuesday 9 February after the tithi begins at 12:49 pm, or on Shashti. The Jayanti street queue is hard on knees.
On a budget: MSRTC from Swargate before 6 am, mahaprasad lunch at the temple, bus back from the stand 450 m away.
On a tight schedule: taxi at 5 am, in line by 7, darshan by 9, back in Pune for lunch.
Adding temples: Theur Chintamani is about 25 km from Pune and about 70 km from Morgaon; darshan runs 6 am–1 pm and 2–10 pm, with 3–4 hour waits in Ganesh festival weeks. Siddhatek is 75–90 km further east and holds its own Magha festival, so leave it for another day. Our two-day Ashtavinayak circuit covers all eight.
Avoid arriving between 11 am and 2 pm, when the madhyahna pooja, the palkhi and the mahaprasad crowd land together.
Morgaon has basic rooms and trust accommodation that fill days ahead of Jayanti; Jejuri, 17 km away, has more. Most Pune Yatris go and return the same day, which is the right call.
If you are staging in the city, our guide to where to stay in Pune for a temple trip covers the Hadapsar side, the quickest exit to Saswad.
Reach before the sun, stand where the Nandi looks, and let Mayureshwar's birthday be the first stop of your Ashtavinayak. Ganpati Bappa Morya.
