Pick a weekday and arrive between 12 noon and 4 PM, and the free darshan line at Mahakaleshwar is often under an hour. Pick a Monday and the same line runs 3 to 5 hours.
Pick a Shravan Monday and it ran 6 to 8 hours in 2026, with the Bhasma Aarti pulled forward to 2:30 AM and over six lakh Yatris in the town.
This guide gives you the numbers by day and hour, the Shravan 2026 record so you know what the month does to the temple, and the Shravan 2027 dates so you can decide now whether to go for the crowd or around it.
These are the figures 2026 guides and news reports agree on. They are not official temple data, so treat them as the shape of the week rather than a promise.
| Day | Free general queue | ₹250 Sheeghra queue |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday–Thursday, 12–4 PM | about 45 min | 20–30 min |
| Tuesday–Thursday, morning or evening | 1–2 hrs | about 45 min |
| Saturday, Sunday | 2–4 hrs | about 1 hr |
| Ordinary Monday | 3–5 hrs | 1 hr or more |
| Shravan Monday 2026 | 6–8 hrs | ₹300 fee, long |
| Mahashivratri, Nag Panchami | continuous darshan, many hours | often suspended |
Monday is Shiva's day, and Ujjain is a day trip from Indore, so every Monday is a small festival. The queue builds from about 7 AM, peaks between 9 and 11, and thins only after 3 PM.
Shravan in Ujjain ran from 30 July to 28 August 2026 on the Purnimanta calendar, with the Bhadau sawaris stretching the season to 7 September. The committee changed the timings for the whole stretch.
Bhasma Aarti: moved to 3 AM daily, and to 2:30 AM on Mondays, with doors opening at 2:30. Regular 4 AM timings returned on 8 September.
Garbhagriha and jalabhishek: closed to all Yatris for the month.
Sheeghra Darshan: the fee rose to ₹300.
Entry: general darshan from the Triveni Museum side; the paid lines through Gate 1 and Gate 5.
Crowds: about 6.13 lakh Yatris on the first Monday, 3 August; over 7.8 lakh reported around the third sawari on 17 August.
Expect the same pattern in 2027. The committee announces the Shravan timetable about two weeks before the month starts.
The reason Shravan Mondays are different is the Mahakal Sawari, the procession of the Lord through the old city. In 2026 there were six: 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 August, and the royal Shahi Sawari on 7 September.
3:30 PM — pooja in the temple's sabha mandap.
4 PM — the palki leaves the temple.
Route — Mahakal Chauraha, Gudri Chauraha, Bakshi Bazaar and Kaharwadi to Ramghat on the Kshipra.
At Ramghat — abhishek with Kshipra water and aarti.
About 7 PM — the palki returns to the temple.
Roads on the route close from early afternoon. If you want darshan on a sawari day, do it before noon and watch the procession from Ramghat; if you want darshan only, come on Tuesday. Our best time to visit Ujjain guide covers the rest of the year.
Madhya Pradesh follows the Purnimanta calendar, so Ujjain's Shravan starts a fortnight before Maharashtra's. For 2027:
Shravan begins: Monday, 19 July 2027.
Shravan Somvars: 19 July, 26 July, 2 August, 9 August and 16 August 2027, five in all.
Shravan Purnima, Raksha Bandhan: 17 August 2027.
Sawaris: expect one each Monday, plus the Bhadau sawaris and the Shahi Sawari in late August or early September, announced by the committee in July.
A Maharashtra Yatri planning by the Amanta calendar, where Shravan runs 3 to 31 August 2027, will arrive two weeks late for the first Ujjain Somvar. Check the Purnimanta date.
You want darshan, not the crowd: Tuesday to Thursday, 12 noon to 4 PM. Free line, under an hour, Sheeghra ticket unnecessary.
With elderly parents: the same weekday afternoon, with the ₹250 Sheeghra ticket as insurance. Never a Monday. Our darshan with elderly parents guide has the wheelchair and e-cart details.
You want a Monday but a sane one: an ordinary Monday outside Shravan, arriving by 6 AM or after 3 PM, Sheeghra ticket in hand.
You want the Shravan experience: go for the sawari, not the queue. Darshan on the Sunday evening before, the sawari from Ramghat on Monday at 4 PM.
On a tight schedule from Indore: leave at 10:30 AM on a weekday, darshan at 12:30, back by 3. The Indore to Ujjain guide has the road and train options.
Avoid: Shravan Mondays, Mahashivratri and Nag Panchami unless you have booked a room and accepted a day in the line.
Arriving at 9 AM on a Monday. The queue peaks between 9 and 11.
Expecting the Bhasma Aarti at 4 AM in Shravan. It moved to 3 AM, and 2:30 on Mondays, in 2026.
Planning Shravan by the Maharashtra calendar. Ujjain starts two weeks earlier.
Driving to the temple on a sawari afternoon. The route roads close; park at the Triveni side or stay on foot.
Skipping the ₹250 ticket on a Monday to save money. It is the difference between one hour and four.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
On a Monday the whole timing problem is solved by sleeping within 1 km of the temple. You walk to the 6 AM line while the Indore traffic is still on the highway, and walk back to rest before the afternoon.
In Shravan rooms near the temple sell out two to three weeks ahead of each Monday, and three to four weeks ahead of the Shahi Sawari. Our where to stay in Ujjain guide lists the lanes by walking distance.
Mahakal is the same at 1 PM on a Wednesday as at 9 AM on a Shravan Monday. Only the line is different. Choose the hour, book the room, and let the crowd be someone else's story. Har Har Mahadev.
