Sandipani Ashram in Ujjain is free to enter, open roughly from 6 am to 8 pm, and takes 30–45 minutes to see properly. It is the gurukul where Krishna, Balram and Sudama studied, about 5 km from Mahakaleshwar and 1.5 km from Mangalnath, which makes it the easiest temple in Ujjain to do with children.
This guide covers the hours, what is inside, and a half-day loop that keeps kids interested.
The Mahabharata and the Bhagavata place Guru Sandipani's gurukul at Avantika, today's Ujjain. Krishna, his brother Balram and their friend Sudama came here to study, and the tradition says Krishna mastered the 14 vidyas and 64 kalas in 64 days.
Two episodes children already know happened here. Sudama kept the chana meant for both friends during a storm in the forest, the seed of the later Sudama-and-the-rice story. And at the end of his studies Krishna asked what guru-dakshina Sandipani wanted, and brought back the guru's drowned son from the sea.
Tell the story in the car. Inside, every object connects to it, and a child who knows the plot will look for the slate, the well and the standing bull.
Entry is free. The ashram is a living temple with pujaris, not a museum, so there is no ticket counter. Carry small notes for the aarti thali and a dakshina if you have a pooja done.

Sources disagree on the exact hours, from "6 am to 7 pm" to "9 am to 7 pm". Nobody disputes the morning. Arrive by 8 am and you are inside under every version.
Gomti Kund: a stepped stone tank. The legend is that Krishna drew the water of every tirtha into it so his ageing guru would not have to travel. Yatris fill a bottle; it is the thing kids remember.
Ankapat: the spot where Krishna is said to have washed his writing slate. A stone with the numerals 1 to 100 is attributed to Sandipani himself.
The standing Nandi: almost every Nandi in India sits. This one stands, said to have risen when Shiva appeared before Krishna. The sculpture is dated to the Shunga period, which makes it older than most of the city.
Sarveshwar Mahadev: the ashram's Shiva shrine, with pujaris who will do a short abhishek on request.
Murtis of Guru Sandipani, Krishna, Balram and Sudama: the modern mandir at the centre, where the aarti happens.
The whole walk is flat and shaded, with no steps except the kund. A pram manages everything but the kund.
The ashram sits on Mangalnath Road in the north of the city. Distances vary by source, so these are rounded.
| From | Distance | By auto |
|---|---|---|
| Mahakaleshwar | about 5 km | 15–20 min |
| Ujjain Junction | about 5–6 km | 15–20 min |
| Mangalnath mandir | about 1.5 km | 5 min |
| Siddhavat | about 3 km | 10 min |
The loop that works with children, in order:
Mangalnath at 7 am, the birthplace of Mars and the Bhat pooja temple, quiet before 9. On a Tuesday it is packed, so swap it to the end.
Sandipani Ashram by 8 am, 45 minutes.
Siddhavat, the banyan on the Shipra, 20 minutes, with a boat if the children want one.
Gadkalika on the way back towards the city, 20 minutes.
Mahakal after lunch, when the morning rush has thinned.
Our temples near Ujjain one-day circuit covers the wider ring, and the Ujjain local darshan taxi day shows how a driver sequences all seven.
Go early. The ashram grounds are open, and after 10 am in summer there is little shade at the kund.
One bottle per child for Gomti Kund water. It stops the arguing.
Set the game before you enter: find the numbers stone, find the bull that stands, find the well. Forty-five minutes vanishes.
Shoes off at the mandir only; the rest of the compound is fine in sandals.
Snacks after, not inside. Nothing is sold within the ashram.
Toilets are basic. Use the hotel before you leave.
Children under about five get the kund and the bull. Over eight, they get the whole story and will ask about Sudama's chana.
Family with young children: the full north loop by taxi, morning, Sandipani second stop. Done by noon.
With elders: Sandipani and Mangalnath only; both are flat. Skip Siddhavat's boat.
On a budget: a shared auto to Mangalnath Road, walk the 1.5 km between Mangalnath and the ashram, auto back.
On a tight schedule: Sandipani alone from Mahakal, 15 minutes each way, 45 inside. Ninety minutes total.
Avoid a Tuesday morning at Mangalnath with children; the Bhat pooja crowd is a two-hour wait. Do Sandipani first and Mangalnath last that day.

Stay near Mahakal, not near the ashram. The north loop is a fifteen-minute drive from the temple lanes, and the temple lanes are where the 4 am aarti, the evening aarti and the food are. For a family our two-day Ujjain itinerary pairs the north loop with the river evening.
Fill the bottle at Gomti Kund, find the standing Nandi, and let the children tell the story back to you in the car. Jai Shri Krishna.
