Vijayadashami 2026 falls on Tuesday, 20 October, and in Ujjain it means something the rest of the country doesn't do: Lord Mahakal himself is carried in procession out of the old city and into Freeganj, the one part of town his sawari visits only on this single day of the year.
Here's the route, the timing, and where to stand if you want to actually see it rather than just hear about it from the back of a crowd.
Vijayadashami 2026 is Tuesday, 20 October
Dashami Tithi begins at 9:20 AM that day and runs to 10:41 AM on the 21st
with the formal Vijay Muhurat window between 2:34 and 3:15 PM for anyone doing puja at that specific auspicious time.
The temple's own Dussehra ritual starts with worship of a replica of Lord Mahakal and a Shami tree at the Mahakaleshwar temple itself, echoing the old story of the Pandavas retrieving their weapons from a Shami tree before battle.
From there, the procession sets out around 4 PM, and this is genuinely the one event on Ujjain's calendar that's distinct from the far more frequent Shravan-Bhadau Sawaris — those are weekly through August and September and already wrapped for this year
Dussehra's procession is a single, separate occasion built around Vijayadashami itself.
The procession leaves Mahakaleshwar Temple around 4 PM and moves through Gudri Chouraha, Pati Bazaar, Gopal Mandir, Sarafa, Sati Gate, Nai Sadak, Daulatganj and Malipura before crossing into new Ujjain via Dewasgate Chamunda Chouraha and the Freeganj Over-bridge — the crossing that makes this day different from every other sawari.
It continues through Tower Chowk, Shaheed Park and past Madhav Nagar Hospital before reaching Dussehra Maidan, where district officials perform the Shami tree puja and the Ravana effigy burning takes place as the evening's main civic event.
Horse riders, a police band, an elephant and bhajan groups accompany the palanquin, so this isn't a quiet ritual walk — it's Ujjain's biggest single procession of the year outside Simhastha.
Reach your chosen spot by 1–2 PM if you want an unobstructed view — the route fills in from both sides well before the 4 PM start, and once the palanquin is moving, crossing the road becomes difficult until it fully passes.
The stretch around Gopal Mandir and Sarafa gives you the older, denser part of the route with more shade and shops to wait in
Freeganj Over-bridge and Tower Chowk are the spots unique to this specific day, worth prioritizing if you've seen a regular sawari before and want the part that only happens on Dussehra.
Dussehra Maidan itself, where the Ravana effigy burns after dark, draws the single largest crowd of the evening.
| Where | Why go there | Crowd level |
|---|---|---|
| Gopal Mandir / Sarafa | Classic old-city route, shaded waiting | Heavy |
| Freeganj Over-bridge / Tower Chowk | The once-a-year new-city crossing | Heavy, less shade |
| Dussehra Maidan | Ravana Dahan, Shami puja finale | Very heavy after dark |
Outside the procession itself, Mahakaleshwar's regular schedule holds:
Bhasma Aarti runs 4–6 AM
Dadyodak Aarti 7:30–8 AM
Bhog Aarti 10:30–11 AM
and Shayan Aarti 10:30–11 PM.
None of the available temple notices point to a special Dussehra-specific change to these, but festival days routinely bring longer queues and occasional extended hours at the temple's discretion, so confirm the day's Bhasma Aarti slot when you register if you're combining an early darshan with the evening procession
it's a long day either way, and worth pacing rather than rushing both.
Want the temple ritual and the procession both — do Bhasma Aarti or general darshan early, rest through the afternoon, and be at your viewing spot by 2 PM at the latest for the 4 PM start.
Only interested in the procession — skip the temple entirely and head straight for Freeganj Over-bridge or Tower Chowk; that's the stretch unique to this one day.
With children or elders — Gopal Mandir/Sarafa has more shade, food stalls and places to sit while waiting, at the cost of a more crowded pavement.
What to avoid — don't plan road travel through the old city or Freeganj between 3 and 8 PM on the 20th; the route closes progressively as the palanquin moves.

A room anywhere within walking distance of the Mahakaleshwar temple area puts you close to both the morning darshan and the procession's starting point, though roads nearby will be closed for hours that evening.
If your priority is the Freeganj crossing specifically, staying on that side of town cuts the walk back after the crowds disperse.
Either way, book ahead — Dussehra is one of Ujjain's busiest tourism dates outside Simhastha, and rooms near the temple go first.
Pick your spot for the Freeganj crossing before 2 PM, and the rest of Ujjain's biggest evening of the year takes care of itself. Jai Mahakal.
