A group of ten to twenty Yatris can finish Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar from Indore in two days, but three rules decide whether it goes smoothly. Bhasma Aarti passes are capped at four per booking, outside vehicles stop about a kilometre from Mahakal, and nothing at Omkareshwar is performed after sunset.
This plan is built around those three, for a family group, a society trip or an office yatra.
The Bhasma Aarti pass is the hard part. Everything else can be bought on the day.
Bhasma Aarti pass: about ₹200 per person, online only on the official Mahakaleshwar portal. Slots open about 30 days ahead at 8 am and go within minutes.
The cap: 4 persons per booking, each with a photo and government ID uploaded.
The new rule: since July 2026, one permission per mobile number every three months, and it covers protocol and VIP entries too.
Sheeghra darshan: ₹250 per person at Gate 4, bought on the day. On the heaviest days the temple halts it, as it did on 13 October 2026.
So a group of 16 needs four different phones, four sets of ID photos ready, and four people clicking at 8 am exactly 30 days before. Decide the date first, then assign the bookers. Anyone who fails gets general darshan after the aarti instead, which our guide to Mahakal without a Bhasma Aarti pass explains.
Ujjain keeps outside vehicles away from the temple square. The driver drops you at the designated parking and you cover the last kilometre by e-shuttle, e-rickshaw or on foot.
| Place | Vehicle stops at | Last stretch |
|---|---|---|
| Mahakaleshwar | Karkaraj, Triveni or Bhilwara zones, ~1 km | E-shuttle or e-rickshaw, ₹20 to ₹60 |
| Omkareshwar | New Bus Stand lot, 300+ vehicles | Walk over the 235 m new bridge to the gate |
| Maheshwar | Fort gate parking | 5-minute walk to Ahilya Ghat |
On Mondays, weekends and festival days, Ujjain pushes parking further out. At Omkareshwar the trust closes the town to vehicles on big days and everyone parks outside; the Old Bus Stand lot holds another 200 or so.
Build in 30 minutes at each temple for the parking-to-gate transfer with a group. That is where most schedules slip.
2 pm leave Indore. The 55 km drive takes about an hour and a half with a stop.
4 pm check in near Mahakal. Rooms within a kilometre matter for the 3 am walk.
5 pm general darshan or the ₹250 line. Mahakaleshwar is open from about 4 am to 11 pm.
7 pm Mahakal Lok corridor, then Harsiddhi and Kal Bhairav for those who want them.
9 pm lights out. The pass-holders report at the temple by 3 am.
For the rest of the group, the temple committee runs a ₹100 darshan bus to ten Ujjain temples from Harsiddhi Chowk at 7:30 am. Children pay ₹50. It is a tidy way to keep non-pass holders busy while the Bhasma Aarti party is inside.
The aarti runs about 4 to 6 am. Pass-holders rejoin the group for breakfast by 7 am and the vehicle leaves Ujjain by 9 am.
Ujjain to Omkareshwar is about 140 km, three to three and a half hours. Reach by 1 pm, which is the temple's midday bhog pause, so eat first. Darshan resumes after about 1 pm and the ₹300 Vishesh Darshan ticket is sold at the counter on weekdays.
Afternoon darshan at the Jyotirlinga, then the bridge to Mamleshwar across the Narmada.
Narmada aarti on the ghat at dusk; Shayan Aarti is around 8:20 to 9 pm.
Groups wanting a Jalabhishek must book it a day ahead through the trust at ₹2,100 for two persons and ₹300 per extra person, and it has to finish before sunset.
Sleep in Omkareshwar if the group wants Mangal Aarti at 5 am. Otherwise drive the 80 km back to Indore the same evening, about two and a half hours.
Maheshwar is 60 km west of Omkareshwar and 90 km from Indore, so it slots neatly into a third morning. The Ahilya Ghat temples, the Rajrajeshwar temple and the fort are all within a short walk of one parking lot, which groups appreciate.
Leave Omkareshwar after Mangal Aarti, reach Maheshwar by 9 am, and be in Indore for a late lunch. Our three-day Mahakal, Omkareshwar and Maheshwar itinerary gives the same loop hour by hour.
8 to 12 people: a 12-seater tempo traveller. It fits the Ujjain inner lanes better than anything larger and can use the nearer lots.
13 to 20 people: a 17 or 20-seater. Expect to park at the outer zones in Ujjain and walk or shuttle; plan 30 extra minutes per temple.
Mostly elderly: skip Bhasma Aarti for those who cannot stand two hours, use the ₹250 line in the afternoon, and take the trust's wheelchair service at Omkareshwar.
On a budget: dharamshalas near Mahakal run about ₹500 to ₹1,200 a bed and take groups, but book six weeks out for weekends.
Avoid: Mondays and the dates on our Nov to Dec 2026 crowd calendar. Parking moves out, the paid line closes, and a group loses half a day.
Night one is Ujjain, within a kilometre of Mahakaleshwar, so pass-holders can walk at 3 am and the rest can sleep. Dharamshalas and larger hotels near the temple take group bookings, but weekend and festival dates fill about six weeks ahead.
Night two depends on the plan. Omkareshwar rooms on the temple side suit groups doing Mangal Aarti; Indore suits groups with an early train the next day. Our where to sleep each night guide weighs the two.
Fix the date, assign the four bookers, and let one driver handle the rest. Har Har Mahadev.
