Kolhapur's Mahalakshmi Temple, one of Maharashtra's Shakti Peeths, sits roughly a full day's drive from Shirdi. If you're combining Sai Baba's dham with a stop at Ambabai's shrine, two questions matter most: when can you get darshan, and how do you actually get there. Here's what the temple's timings and the road, rail, and bus options look like right now.
The temple opens well before sunrise. Darshan generally runs from around 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM, with the sanctum briefly closing between the late-morning and evening sessions on some days. Regular darshan is free — no ticket is needed to join the general queue.
Four aartis structure the day. The Kakad Aarti opens the morning at 5:30 AM, followed by evening aartis around 6:30 PM, 8:00 PM, and 10:00 PM. Arriving 20-30 minutes before an aarti gets you closest to the sanctum.
There's no enforced dress code, but the trust asks for modest clothing — avoid shorts and sleeveless tops. Photography is not allowed inside the inner sanctum, so put phones away once you're near the garbhagriha.
Shirdi to Kolhapur covers roughly 400 to 430 km, depending on which route your driver takes. Distance calculators disagree because there are two workable corridors, and both eventually join NH48.
Most taxis run via Ahmednagar – Pune – Satara – Karad, joining NH48 at Satara and staying on it into Kolhapur. It's the more reliable stretch, with fuel stops and dhabas roughly every hour.
Monday and Friday are the heaviest darshan days at Mahalakshmi Temple — both are considered especially sacred to the Goddess, and Friday evening queues have run close to two hours. Tuesday and Wednesday are comparatively quiet.
If your schedule allows, aim for:
Tuesday or Wednesday, any time of day
Early morning between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM, any day of the week

There's no formal VIP darshan pass at Mahalakshmi Temple, but an E-Darshan pass booked through the temple trust's own website helps you skip the general queue during busy hours. Regular darshan itself stays free.
Special sevas are priced separately. Confirm current rates at the trust counter, since seva pricing is revised from time to time.
| Seva | Approx. Price |
|---|---|
| Padya Pooja | ₹350 |
| Kumkum Archana | ₹550 |
| Panchamrut Abhishek | ₹750 |
| Mahabhishek | ₹1,100 |
There's no direct train between Sainagar Shirdi and Kolhapur. The fastest rail connections run via Kurduvadi Junction with a change, and the full journey stretches past 11 hours 35 minutes — workable if you have the time, tiring if you don't.
MSRTC runs direct buses on this route too. Fares land between ₹900 and ₹1,210 depending on the bus type, but journey time is close to 10 hours, longer than the same trip by road in a cab.
If you're weighing similar trade-offs for another leg of a Maharashtra pilgrimage circuit, our guide to Shirdi to Pandharpur covers the same taxi-versus-bus-versus-train question in more detail.
Kirnotsav is Mahalakshmi Temple's signature festival, when the setting sun's rays fall directly on the deity for three evenings. It happens twice a year — around January 31 to February 2, and again near November 9-11. Both windows draw dense crowds.
Navratri 2026 runs from October 11 to October 19, with Vijayadashami on October 20. If your Kolhapur stop lands inside this window, book both a darshan slot and your room well ahead — this is the temple's busiest fortnight of the year.

Most Yatris base themselves in the lanes around Mahadwar Road and Bhawani Mandap, a five-to-ten-minute walk from the temple. Rooms here range from simple lodges to mid-range hotels, and the closest options fill first, especially around Kirnotsav and Navratri.
If you're combining this with a wider circuit, our Ashtavinayak Yatra from Shirdi guide is worth reading too — many operators bundle Shirdi, Pandharpur, and Kolhapur into one multi-day route, and knowing the order helps you avoid backtracking.
Whether you reach Ambabai's shrine by road, rail, or bus, the darshan itself asks for nothing more than patience and an early start. Jai Ambe.
