The best time for the Ujjain–Omkareshwar two-day trip is October to February: cool mornings for the 2 am Bhasma Aarti reporting, a full Narmada, and an open parikrama path. Neither temple ever closes for a season, so the real question is crowds. The dates below tell you which weeks fill both towns and which stay quiet.
Both towns sit on the Malwa–Nimar plateau, so the weather follows one pattern. The 4 am aarti and the 7 km island parikrama are what make temperature matter.
| Months | Weather | What it means for the trip |
|---|---|---|
| Oct–Nov | 15–30°C, dry | Best balance; Dussehra and Diwali weeks are busy |
| Dec–Jan | days 27°C, nights 12–13°C | Coldest 2 am reporting; carry a shawl, quiet weekdays |
| Feb–Mar | warming, 20–33°C | Mahashivratri surge, then a lull after Holi |
| Apr–Jun | 31–45°C | Parikrama only before 9 am; cheapest rooms |
| Jul–Sep | 24–32°C, rain | Shravan crowds, river ghats closed, ghat road slow |
For the route, timings and the day-by-day plan itself, read our two-day Ujjain–Omkareshwar trip plan first.
These are the weeks when Bhasma Aarti passes vanish within minutes of release and Omkareshwar's free line runs three hours.
Shravan 2026 (MP calendar): 30 July – 28 August. Shravan Mondays are 3, 10, 17 and 24 August; Mahakal's sawari processions continue on 31 August and the shahi sawari on 7 September.
Nag Panchami: Monday, 17 August 2026. Nagchandreshwar, on the top floor of Mahakal, opens for its single 24-hour window. The heaviest day of the year.
Dussehra: 20 October 2026. Diwali Lakshmi pooja: 8 November. Long-weekend crowds in both towns.
Kartik Purnima: 24 November 2026. Kshipra snan at Ujjain and Narmada deep daan at Omkareshwar. See our Kartik Purnima at Ujjain guide.
Makar Sankranti: 14 January 2027. Narmada Jayanti: 13 February 2027, Omkareshwar's own festival.
Mahashivratri: Saturday, 6 March 2027. Shiv Navratri runs the nine days before. Holi follows on 23 March.
The rains do not close either Jyotirlinga, but they change Omkareshwar. When upstream rain pushes the dam to open its gates, the district shuts the ghats and halts every boat; in late July 2025 that happened with nine gates open.
Darshan continues by the footbridge; the island itself stays open.
The parikrama path has slippery stone sections. Skip it in heavy rain, especially with elders.
The Indore–Khandwa road's Choral ghat is a two-lane, winding stretch that slows badly in a downpour. Add an hour to the usual 3.5–4 hour drive.
The three tunnels being bored under Bherughat, Baigram and Choral ghat are expected to open around December 2026, which should take most of the monsoon pain out of this leg from 2027.
From mid-November to mid-February the drive is dry, the river is full after the monsoon and boats run across to the island. Omkareshwar's 5 am opening is comfortable and the 7 km parikrama is pleasant at any hour.
The one surprise is the Bhasma Aarti line. December nights in Ujjain sit around 12–13°C, and you stand outside from about 1:30 am. Carry a shawl you can leave in the cloakroom with your phone, because the sanctum dress rule still applies.
Weekday mornings in December and January are the easiest free-queue darshan of the year at both temples. Rooms near Mahakal are plentiful outside the New Year week.
Prices below are what cab and hotel platforms showed in early October 2026; they move with demand.
| When | Rooms near Mahakal | Taxi availability | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shravan Mondays, Mahashivratri week | well above ₹1,500 and sold out early | book days ahead | Busiest |
| Diwali, Kartik Purnima, New Year | high | tight | Busy |
| Weekdays Dec–Feb | about ₹800–1,500 | easy | Best value |
| April–June weekdays | lowest of the year | easy | Cheapest, but 40°C+ |
A one-way sedan Ujjain → Omkareshwar runs roughly ₹1,700–2,700 and an Innova two-day round trip starts near ₹12,000 in a normal week. Festival weeks add surge, so fix the car when you fix the Bhasma Aarti date.
With elderly parents: November, December or February, on a Tuesday–Thursday. Book Shighra Darshan at both temples (₹250 at Mahakal, ₹300 at Omkareshwar) and skip the parikrama.
For the festival itself: Mahashivratri 2027 or a Shravan Monday, with the pass booked the moment the 30-day window opens.
On a budget: late April to June, with darshan before 9 am and the afternoon indoors.
For the river: October–November, when the Narmada is full and boats run.
Avoid: the first week of August and 17 August 2026 unless you want the crowd; and any monsoon day for the parikrama.

Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
In every season night one is in Ujjain, inside a kilometre of Mahakaleshwar, because of the pre-2:30 am reporting time. Night two at Omkareshwar is worth it in winter for the 8:30 pm Shayan Aarti; in the monsoon, Indore is the drier bet.
Pick a cool weekday, book the pass the day the window opens, and both Jyotirlingas will feel unhurried. Har Har Mahadev.
