January 1, 2027 is a Friday, so the New Year rush at Mahakaleshwar runs straight into a three-day weekend. Last season more than 7 lakh Yatris took darshan between December 25 and 31 alone. From Indore, 55 km away, the plan is to leave in the dark, park where the police send you, and walk the last 2.5 km.
The temple committee reported more than 7 lakh Yatris between December 25 and 31, 2025, and the district put arrivals that week at 1.5 to 2 lakh a day. For January 1, 2026 itself the administration planned for 2 to 2.5 lakh through the day.
A year earlier the estimate for December 31 and January 1 together was about 10 lakh. Security last January 1 ran to 1,200 police, 200 CCTV cameras and 5 drones. The 2026–27 orders will come in the last week of December, but the pattern has held three years running.
| Date (last season) | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Dec 25–31, 2025 | 7 lakh+ Yatris, about 1.5–2 lakh a day |
| Dec 31, 2025 | ~45 min in the general queue, VIP protocol shut |
| Jan 1, 2026 | 2–2.5 lakh planned for the day, 1,200 police |
| Dec 31, 2024 – Jan 1, 2025 | ~10 lakh estimated in Ujjain over two days |
During the rush the general queue does not use the main gate. Last season it entered at the Triveni Museum, passed Nandi Gate into Mahakal Lok, then Mansarovar Bhavan, the facility centre and the tunnel to Ganesh Mandapam, exiting near Bachhda Ganesh.
That is a walk of about 2.5 km, with the queue moving the whole way. Shoe stands and laddu prasad counters moved out to Harsiddhi Mandir, Char Dham and Bade Ganpati, so hand over footwear there, not at the temple.
Protocol and VIP darshan were suspended from December 27 to January 5 last season. Do not rely on a reference letter; nobody got in on one.
The ₹250 counters stayed open last New Year, moved out to the same three points: Harsiddhi, Char Dham and Bade Ganpati. The ticket bought a shorter queue, but still the long walk through Mahakal Lok.
Buy it at the counter only, never from anyone outside. Our Sheeghra Darshan guide explains what the ticket covers on a normal day. On January 1 expect less, and plan for 45 minutes to over an hour either way.
Online Bhasma Aarti permission was suspended from December 25, 2025 to January 5, 2026. The only route was an offline form at the temple counter, submitted one day in advance, with a strict cap.
For everyone else the committee ran a chalit (moving) Bhasma Aarti darshan: you walk past designated points and see the 4 am aarti from a distance, without stopping. Last January 1 the moving arrangement was timed at 40 to 45 minutes.
If the 4 am aarti is the point of your trip, come on a normal weekday instead. Our Bhasma Aarti pass guide from Indore covers how online booking works the rest of the year.
The 55 km from Indore normally takes about 1.5 hours. On New Year the police send Indore–Dewas side cars to Karkaraj and the Bhil Samaj ground, two-wheelers to Narsingh Ghat and Harsiddhi Pal, with reserve lots at the Engineering College and Prashanti Chauraha.
Last season the police also had Google Maps re-route cars to outskirts parking, so follow the diversions rather than fighting them. From Karkaraj you walk; nothing drives closer.
Best slot: leave Indore at 2:30–3 am, be in the queue by 4:30 am, out by 7 am before the day crowd builds.
Second best: December 31 before noon, when the weekday crowd is normal and the night rush has not started.
Avoid: arriving between 9 pm on December 31 and 9 am on January 1 expecting to park near Mahakal Lok.
By train: the early Indore Junction–Ujjain passengers take about an hour; see our train timings post.
With elderly parents: skip January 1. Go on Tuesday, January 5 or later, when protocol darshan and online passes resume. The 2.5 km rush route has no wheelchair shortcut.
On a tight schedule (Dec 31 to Jan 2): Mahakal at dawn on December 31, Omkareshwar on January 1, fly out January 2. Omkareshwar is busy on January 1 too, but it is not a 10-lakh crowd.
With children: take the December 31 morning slot, carry water and a shawl, keep footwear in the car. Our Mahakal with kids post has the pace.
For the Bhasma Aarti itself: any weekday from January 6, booked online the moment the window opens.
Avoid: Monday, January 4. Mondays are Mahakal's heavy day on their own; see the crowd calendar.
Sleep in Indore if you fly or take a train in. Rooms are plentiful, the 3 am start is easy with a waiting taxi, and you are back for breakfast.
Sleep in Ujjain only if you can book within a kilometre of Mahakal Lok, and do it by mid-November. In the last week of December Ujjain rooms go first, and anything farther out leaves you on the same 2.5 km walk anyway. Our where to sleep guide compares both.
Start the year with Mahakal, but start it at 3 am from Indore. Har Har Mahadev.
